Windows 10 Technical Preview deep-dive: A promise of better things to come
It's been nearly a week since Microsoft announced that it will follow Windows 8.1 with Windows 10 -- and released its Technical Preview so that those interested could take a first look at the new operating system. Since then I've been exploring the new OS, alongside the sparse documentation Microsoft has released.MORE ON NETWORK WORLD: 10 (FREE!) Microsoft tools to make admins happier Much of the under-the-hood kernel level work has been done; the Preview is a tool for Microsoft to understand how to bring its next-generation Windows to its desktop users. That's an important problem for the Windows team to solve before the new OS is released in mid-2015. Some enterprise customers are still moving from Windows XP to Windows 7, so Microsoft needs to put in place an upgrade path from Windows 7 to this new version. It needs, as Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president of operating systems, said in San Francisco, "to feel like going from a Prius to a Tesla" -- without having to learn to drive all over again. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Dronecode: A home for drones
If I had to pick the top ten hottest technology fields of 2014 right now, one of my choices would be drones.Actually, the term “drone” is generally misused as it should strictly only be applied to pilotless, autonomous devices (“unmanned aerial vehicles” or UAVs) but, thanks to the US military and the mainstream press, the term has come to encompass remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs) as well.WIKIMEDIA Parrot AR.Drone 2.0To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

With 1 million users, Windows 10 is generating a lot of feedback
Windows 10's "Technical Preview" (read: beta) is off to a good start, with more than one million signups for the program, Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Operating Systems Group, revealed in a lengthy Windows blog post recently.Feedback is pouring in, with more than 200,000 pieces of user feedback submitted via the Windows Feedback app. That doesn't count what Microsoft must be getting from background telemetry and crash reports, and Belfiore encouraged people to keep providing more feedback.Users have three options to provide feedback: they can use the Windows Feedback app built into the Tech Preview software, the Windows Technical Preview Program forum, and a new feature, the Windows Suggestion Box on UserVoice, which is open to anyone who wants to send Microsoft ideas and suggestions for Windows without installing Windows 10 or signing up as an Insider. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

CIOs Share Must-Have Cloud Skills
As the clouds roll in, IT organizations are recasting their tech talent requirements. “You don’t need people to build servers anymore. You need somebody good at managing another organization responsible for doing that. That’s a different skill,” says Josh Jewett, CIO at Family Dollar. “You go from managing outcomes yourselves to managing outcomes through others.”Jewett is one of 17 CIOs who spoke to us about the move to cloud computing. A key topic of discussion was how to cultivate cloud-ready talent. On the skills front, CIOs are in agreement that companies need to reexamine the traditional roles and capabilities in their IT shops to be successful in the cloud. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
