IS WIMAX REALLY JUST AROUND THE CORNER?

With excitement building about WiMAX, you might be surprised
that, technically, no real WiMAX products are available yet.
That is, none that meet the 802.16 profile as defined by the
WiMAX Forum and certified compatible by the Forum's appointed
lab in Spain. Will there be products? Click here for more:

Today's focus: Moves by Nokia, Quickoffice and RIM, Cingular on
the wireless front

By Keith Shaw

Today we're looking at two recent news announcements that show
that mobile vendors are teaming up to provide new applications
and services for wireless computing device users - with
customers the beneficiaries of the news.

First, Quickoffice announced a licensing agreement with Nokia
that allows the Quickoffice application to become part of the
Series 60 Platform offering. The agreement is aimed at providing
Series 60 smartphone owners easier access to native Word, Excel
and PowerPoint files. The Quickoffice Premier application lets
users view, edit, print and present documents from the smart
phone. The Series 60 Platform is built on the Symbian operating
system that's licensed by several mobile phone manufacturers,
including Nokia, Samsung, LG Electronics and Siemens. More
details on the Quickoffice application is available at its Web
site <http://www.quickoffice.com/>.

Second, Research In Motion (RIM) and Cingular Wireless said that
the BlackBerry Connect service would soon be available on the
upcoming Nokia 9300 device in the U.S. Scheduled for release in
November the 9300 will be able to access a company's BlackBerry
Enterprise Server in order to receive e-mail wirelessly. The
9300 is aimed at the mobile professional who needs a PDA, cell
phone and wireless e-mail device. The device looks like a
traditional cell phone on the outside, yet opens up on the side
to reveal an internal screen and keyboard for faster input of
e-mail and other messages.

With the BlackBerry Connect service, users will be able to get
the feel of using a BlackBerry device on a cell phone. More
details are available at the BlackBerry Web site
<http://www.blackberry.com/> or Cingular's
<http://www.cingular.com/>.
