IETF EFFORT PROMISES FEWER NET FAILURES

the IETF working to standardize a network configuration protocol

In J.R.R. Tolkien's book, Shelob was a giant spider who mainly
caught Orcs in its web. IT staffers at the University of
Indianapolis have created a Shelob that catches PCs before they
can hurt anything else in a network.

Exploit circulating for newly patched Oracle bug

Database administrators now have a little added incentive to
install Oracle's latest security patches, released earlier this
week. Malicious software is now circulating that can crash an
unpatched database server, and one security expert predicted
that more malware targeting the 89 recently patched
vulnerabilities is on the way.

EMC to buy document capture vendor Captiva

EMC agreed Thursday to acquire Captiva Software, a maker of
software for digitally capturing documents, for about $275
million.
