Some software developers try to hide information abou vulnerabilities as a means of "protection". This security-by-obscurity approach doesn't work though because the bad guys can still find and exploit the flaws. Legitimate users will just be unaware and unprotected. On the opposite end of the spectrum though, we have groups and individuals dedicated to finding and announcing software vulnerabilities which vendors must then race to patch before they become exploited.
