Computer scientist Barbara Liskov is this year's winner of the Turing Award, named after British codebreaker Alan Turing. Liskov has had a groundbreaking career. She was the first woman in the U.S. to earn at Ph.D in computer science and has done innovative work developing object-oriented computer languages. She has been a professor at MIT since 1972. MIT provost L. Rafael Reif put it this way: "Every time you exchange an e-mail with a friend, check your bank statement online or run a Google search, you are riding on the momentum of her research."
