SHARE: Another year of Congress failing to act to prevent gun violence

Organizing for Action
Joe --

Today marks a full year since Congress last tried -- and failed -- to take any action to prevent gun violence.

That's when the Senate buckled in the face of special-interest pressure and failed to pass a bipartisan, common-sense bill to expand background checks for gun sales.

After that vote, 1.4 million OFA supporters signed a petition telling congressional leaders we're not backing down. Across the country, volunteers have kept on organizing.

Gun violence isn't going away, and neither are we.

Today, we're coming together to show Congress why it's unacceptable that they've failed to take action to keep our communities safe. Will you share this graphic about the facts on gun violence?

Tell Congress to act to protect our communities.

After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, Americans came together in agreement that something must be done to prevent these tragedies from happening.

President Obama did his part -- since December 2012, he has signed 25 executive actions to reduce gun violence.

In Congress, there are real champions on this issue who can't find enough colleagues to join them in taking meaningful action. Last year's background checks bill was sponsored by Democratic Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia and Republican Senator Pat Toomey from Pennsylvania.

The American people wanted to see them get it done -- nine in 10 Americans said they supported expanding background checks.

But Congress couldn't pass it -- thanks to the gun lobby, and the members of Congress who are too afraid to stand up to them. Last year, the gun lobby poured tens of millions of dollars into seeing that common-sense bill defeated.

We refuse to back down -- OFA is taking the fight to expand background checks to states where we can win. In Washington state, for example, expanded background checks will be on the ballot in 2014 -- and we're going to do everything we can to make sure it passes. Of course, the gun lobby is right behind us, and they have millions to spend to try to defeat these actions.

It's time that our legislators are reminded that we expect more from them. That starts today, by sharing the facts.
