- Friday Platform Trends: Desktop CPUs at a Crossroads

According to CPU guru Vince Freeman, all the trees (new AMD and Intel
processors) springing up lately can make it hard to see the forest. Before
buying your next PC, take a second to sort out the single-core, dual-core,
and in-between (Hyper-Threading) choices; your real needs and software
options; and why, despite the flurry of new model numbers, it may be time
to start paying attention to old-school clock speed again.

Friday Platform Trends: Desktop CPUs at a Crossroads
Your Evolving Intel and AMD Options

After all the hot and heavy action in the PC processor arena this year, it
makes sense to step back, catch your breath, and take stock. Though
conventional, single-threaded software code still dominates operating
systems and applications, archrivals Intel and AMD have been working
overtime to ship dual-core CPUs -- Intel both the Pentium D and Pentium
Extreme Edition chips, AMD the Athlon 64 X2.

And that doesn't even cover the sprawling array of single-core Pentium 4
and Athlon 64 processors, or the impact of Intel's Hyper-Threading
Technology on both its single- and dual-core architectures. Let's roll up
our sleeves and examine the pros and cons of each design.

A source of considerable consumer confusion is the difference between a
true dual-core CPU and one featuring the Hyper-Threading Technology that
premiered with the 3.06GHz Pentium 4 in November 2002. In the most basic
sense, it comes down to physical hardware: Intel's imitation-
multiprocessing technology takes one processor core and segments it into
two parts for multithreaded software support, while Pentium D and Athlon 64
X2 chips offer two distinct processor cores, each able to run code at the
rated clock speed.

The performance advantages of true dual-core design are readily apparent in
a true multithreading environment. To be sure, Hyper-Threading does have
its uses in providing a smoother multitasking environment -- though nowhere
near 2X performance, there's a noticeable throughput boost of approximately
1.2X.

Now let's cash a reality check: For the majority of desktop users, even an
entry-level, single-core processor from AMD's Sempron or Intel's Celeron
line will do the trick, especially if high-end gaming or media encoding are
not part of the equation. For higher performance, a single-core Athlon 64
or Pentium 4 will easily fulfill most requirements, especially with the
Pentium 4's Hyper-Threading. But once we move past basic home and office
systems into hardcore gaming or workstation-style digital content creation,
there are more options to consider ...

AMD Calls New Athlon 64 FX-57 the Ultimate Gaming CPU
Sure, AMD and Intel are moving to dual-core processors, but hardcore 3D
gamers are still running single-threaded software -- so AMD has boosted its
single-core Athlon 64 FX series to 2.8GHz while moving it from 0.13-micron
to 90-nanometer process architecture. (

Nvidia Galvanizes Graphics with GeForce 7800 GTX
Gamers, call your bankers -- it's Nvidia's turn to leapfrog archrival ATI
with a new top-of-the-line graphics accelerator that draws less power while
doubling the performance of the formidable GeForce 6800 Ultra. Whether in a
single-slot or dual-card SLI configuration, the company bills the 7800 GTX
as your route to the highest resolutions and finest image quality ever seen
on a PC -- and to immediate availability instead of a vapor paper launch.
