Today's focus: NW500 survey: Mobility is here to stay
By Keith Shaw
Every year Network World conducts a study of 500 network IT
executives and asks them what they are going to spend money on
in the next year. Included in this survey are questions about
handheld devices, especially in terms of how businesses are
using the devices to promote business objectives. Over the next
two newsletters, we'll discuss the results of the survey and how
they will affect mobile devices going forward.
The study was conducted by Network World and Research Concepts.
Four different surveys were administered simultaneously in March
2005 to a total of 500 different organizations. Data collection
was monitored to ensure that 125 qualified people responded to
each section, so for individual categories (mobile computing
included), results are based on 125 interviews. To qualify,
companies had to have multiple sites with internetworked LANs
and WANs, and have annual networking-related expenditures of
more than $10 million.
Trend 1: Remote and mobile workers are here to stay. When asked
what percentage of their company's workforce requires remote or
mobile access to the network today, and two years from now, the
numbers that came back are amazing. Last year, about 25% of
workers required remote access, and this year it's closer to
31%. In two years, 43% of the workforce is expected to need
mobile or remote access. Even more amazing - 23.2% of companies
surveyed provide half or more of their staff with remote or
mobile access today.
Trend 2: Mobility makes us more productive. When asked why
mobility is so important to enterprises, respondents continue to
say that it improves employee productivity (80%), but also
mention giving them a competitive edge (60%) and being able to
offer a human resource benefit to employees who like working
remotely (57.6%). A fourth reason, being able to save money on
office space by having remote workers, showed a gain in support
(54.4% agreement this year vs. 43.8% last year).
Trend 3: Mobile workers more willing to try different access
methods. When asked about how mobile workers connect to the
corporate data network, DSL and cable modems still reign supreme
(61.6% and 57.6%, respectively), but Wi-Fi hot spot (46.4%) and
cellular data service (36%) are still being considered.
Amazingly, 55.2% of mobile workers are still using dial-up
access. Companies that offer services to boost bandwidth speed
for dial-up (as well as other broadband connections) still have
an audience.
Trend 4: Managing remote and mobile workers won't be outsourced
any time soon. Respondents were asked how likely their company
would be to purchase a complete package to support remote and/or
mobile workers from a service provider that includes cellular
data access, management tools and security offerings. More than
one-half (53.6%) indicated they wouldn't be likely to outsource,
while only 16% said they would consider it. About one-third were
neutral or not sure about this idea.
Five more trends in the world of handheld devices will be
discussed in the next newsletter. Other trends from the Network
World 500 survey are discussed in this article (

written by the lovely and talented Linda Leung (she edits my
ramblings and is very forgiving when my articles are late).
