Malware may leverage the shell open command. This allows it to register itself as the handler for certain file types; thus the virus, worm or Trojan loads when any of these file types are called (which means, it will load automatically when Windows is started). This particular technique can cause a system to be crippled if it's not dealt with properly. Here's how to detect - and properly correct - unwanted changes to shell\open\command.
