SECURITY PREDICTIONS FOR 2008
At the beginning of each year I like to talk about what did or didn't
happen during the past year, and what to expect in the coming year.
Unlike past years, I'll try not to get too emotionally ramped up on all
the failures.

WI-FI VIRUS OUTBREAK IS POSSIBLE, RESEARCHERS SAY
If criminals were to target unsecured wireless routers, they could
create an attack that could piggyback across thousands of Wi-Fi networks
in urban areas like Chicago or New York City, according to researchers
at Indiana University.

Q&A: MCAFEE, SYMANTEC CEOS TALK SECURITY
In early December, InfoWorld Senior Writer Matt Hines had the
opportunity to sit down with John Thompson, chief executive of Symantec,
and David DeWalt, chief executive of McAfee, to interview the leaders
about the strategic direction of their companies and where they see
different aspects of the IT security market heading in 2008 and
beyond.

BOEING DREAMLINER COULD BE VULNERABLE TO HACKERS
The electronics of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner jet could be vulnerable
to hackers due to the way critical flight systems are linked with those
used by passengers, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has
warned.

SYMANTEC SIM BRINGS FRIENDS
What is it, one might reasonably ask, that separates a SIM (security
information manager) from a basic log-file aggregator? Both will, of
course, aggregate log files, but a SIM must go further, gathering
incident alerts and status conditions from a variety of network security
and infrastructure sources. A good SIM will then add some intelligence
to the mix, helping the security engineer figure out which information
is worth his or her immediate attention and which can be ignored until
time to pass a compliance audit.

AFTER CRITICISM, SEARS PLUGS WEB SITE'S PRIVACY HOLE
Sears Holdings has taken part of its Managemyhome.com Web site offline
following revelations that the site was making customers' purchasing
histories publicly available.

FACEBOOK HACK FUELS WEB 2.0 CONCERNS
Researchers at security gateway vendor Fortinet have uncovered an
adware-distribution scheme being carried out on the Facebook social
networking site considered to be the first attack propagated on the
wildly popular online portal.
