Cyberspies have compromised U.S. power grid, newspaper reports
Cyberspies, probably from Russia or China, have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that can disrupt it, says an article in the Wall Street Journal that neither names the source of the information nor where this compromise of the grid is occurring.

Nortel expands its NAC offerings
Nortel today is announcing a second offering in its family of NAC products, a software platform that runs only on virtual servers and is intended for deployment in heterogeneous networks.

FCC moves toward national broadband policy
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has taken the first step toward creating a strategy to roll out broadband to every corner of the country, with a vote Wednesday to seek public comment on how to write a national broadband plan.

HP upgraded software designed to reduce the manual tasks associated with managing VMware, other virtual environments.

HP throws in towel over key Wi-Fi lawsuit
In a move that could have far reaching implications for the Wi-Fi industry, HP has reached a confidential settlement with an Australian government agency that claims to own the US patent for technology used in most wireless LAN (WLAN) equipment.

Microsoft patch rate surged in second half of 2008
Microsoft was forced to pick up the patching pace in the second half of 2008, the company admitted Wednesday, as it fixed 67% more flaws and released 17% more security updates in the period than it had in the first six months of the year.

Unified communications start-up aims to challenge Microsoft, Skype, Google
Dutch start-up Perzonae Unified Communications is working on a service that will combine e-mail, instant messaging and, later, calls and teleconferencing on PCs and mobile phones. The first public beta is now available, it announced on Wednesday.
