Saving with Skype in the mobile enterprise Skype, with its initial proprietary protocols and peer-to-peer behavior, has historically not been particularly popular with enterprise IT departments. However, a few recent moves, including some wireless ones, might be starting to change all that. Mobile operators extend options for cellular discounts The mobile network operators have been quietly enhancing their cellular voice plans to make using their wireless networks for intra-company calls more economically appealing. For a couple of years, the big U.S. operators have offered calling plans that integrate, to a degree, your cellular phone with your PBX feature set and on-net campus calling price plan. Now, those options are becoming more numerous and varied. Skype for SIP targets business customers Skype is making its second run at corporate business with a service that lets its peer-to-peer VoIP clients interact with existing IP PBXs, and this may be just the start of a larger push. Skype is largest international voice carrier, says study Skype carried around 33 billion minutes of international voice calls last year, or around 8% of all international voice traffic, according to market researcher TeleGeography.
