From Cisco Subnet This is Network World's Cisco Subnet news alert in which we focus on the top items from Cisco Subnet, your daily source for Cisco news, blogs, discussion items, security alerts, giveaways and more. What next after CCNA? Wendell Odom: I started out today intending to write about CCNA Security - and ended up giving career advice. Which I usually avoid like the plague. I'm asking readers to help me help those who have just passed the CCNA. Port Scan Attack Detector PSAD Jimmy Ray Purser: I was playing around in my lab the other day trying to build out a low to no cost SMB security design and hide out from my in laws. Of course many vendors already offer good solutions to this problem. But as a victim of the IBM, Unisys days of "My way or the highway," I never ever like to turn over control of my network to a vendor. Should you steer clear of grey market Cisco CCIE training companies? Brad Reese: What about those CCIE training companies not affiliated with Cisco's 360 Program? Should CCIE candidates steer clear of grey market Cisco CCIE training companies? Vendor math and creative specs-manship. Douglas Gourlay: Math is a word that should never need any qualifiers, however, in our industry I have heard of Cabletron Math, Cisco Math, Vendor Math, etc. I don't care who started it, everyone has their own egregious examples, no one is ever totally open about their specs. Cisco's taking a beating in the Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router market Brad Reese: Stan "The EtherMan" Hubbard who's not only a Senior Analyst at Heavy Reading, but also the Chairman of Ethernet Expo Americas 2009 delivered extremely and in my personal opinion terribly bad news to Cisco today. Analysts bullish on Cisco data center rival Brocade The Cisco Subnet blog: The reports are starting to come in from analysts who attended Brocade's annual Analyst Day this week. And those reports indicate growing momentum for the storage networking company and a competitior gaining increasing strength to battle Cisco in the data center. Are Janus Friis, Niklas Zennstrom and Mike Volpi the three stooges of tech litigation? Brad Reese: It's my personal opinion that Janus Friis, Niklas Zennstrom and Mike Volpi are the three stooges of tech litigation. They make a good comedy act on the fallacy of using litigation to enforce software licensing shenanigans to build a business. Cisco and Pelco enter into partnership for HD surveillance The Cisco Subnet blog: Cisco and Pelco, a Schneider Electric company, have entered into a strategic partnership to pursue joint development of high-definition, IP-based video security cameras. Pelco's Sarix imaging technology will be melded with Cisco's IP expertise to make a co-branded product to be sold through Cisco channel partners. The cameras are expected at the end of this year. Survivable Remote Site Telephony part 2 Dennis Hartmann: After a Cisco IP phones registers to the Cisco SRST gateway, the Cisco IP phones will continue to send keep alive messages to the primary Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) server. MGCP Fallback and H.323 Call Preservation Dennis Hartmann: MGCP gateways that lose connectivity to their primary Cisco Unified Communications Manager won't drop calls, but the MGCP gateway cannot be used for any new inbound or outbound calls during a CUCM outage. Microsoft Subnet is giving away training from New Horizons and 15 copies of Windows Server 2008 How-To. Cisco Subnet is giving away 15 copies of Interconnecting Data Centers Using VPLS.
