Open Invention Network is reportedly buying up a number of Linux-related patents that Microsoft sold the rights to earlier this year. The move allows OIN to retain legal rights to the patents and license them freely to the open source community, thereby ensuring that less-scrupulous buyers don't acquire them and initiate frivolous patent-infringement cases.

Microsoft rivals to purchase 22 patents to defend Linux
A group of Linux proponents will purchase patents formerly held by Microsoft in an effort to defend distributors of the open-source OS against the ongoing threat of patent litigation from the software giant.

Android OS Developers to Revamp App Marketplace
In a bid to compete more squarely with Apple's App Store the developers of the Android mobile OS are improving the way people browse for applications on Google phones through what is known as Android Market. As part of a software upgrade (Android 1.6, aka Donut) Android handset owners will be able to browse more easily third-party apps by previewing screen shots of apps and sort apps by criteria such as most popular and newest. There is no official date set for the release of Donut.

Add a Desktop Dictionary to Ubuntu
If you do a lot of writing, a desktop dictionary tool can be a powerful asset. With it, you can highlight a word within any program and then click the dictionary icon in your menu bar, which will open a new Web browser window containing the definition of the word.

Microsoft Subnet is giving away training from New Horizons and 15 copies of Windows Server 2008 How-To. Cisco Subnet is giving away 15 copies of Interconnecting Data Centers Using VPLS.
