From Sidekick to Gmail: A short history of cloud computing outages This past week's Microsoft-T-Mobile-Sidekick data loss mess is the latest in a string of high profile cloud computing outages that have grabbed headlines over the past couple of years. Inevitably, the coverage of the initial outage (as well as cloud security breaches) is followed by explanations of why the outage happened (human error, network equipment, hackers, etc.) and analysis stories pointing out the pitfalls of putting your faith in the cloud. Massive Patch Tuesday planned for October 13 October's Patch Tuesday will land on October 13 and, in an act of either irony or perhaps Microsoft's idea of a humor, will feature 13 updates. These updates will fix a total of 34 holes. Of the 13 updates, eight will be labeled critical and five labeled important. App developer raises price of $2.99 iPhone app to $39.99 in response to complaints about high prices In response to customer complaints that its prices are too high, Schiau Studios raised the price this past weekend of their Alchemize app from $2.99 all the way up to $39.99, making it the most expensive game on the iTunes App Store for a brief period. KDDI pairs a mobile phone with a robot As mobile phones add more features and more users connect with social media, the cell phone becomes a more important part of people's lives. Japanese carrier KDDI has developed a robot companion that seeks to bridge the gap between a phone and its user and a prototype was shown at this week's Ceatec expo near Tokyo.
