Joe -- I don't usually get heartburn from breakfast, but then again, I don't usually read headlines like this over coffee: If you're wondering why this article about 2012 is just being written now, it's because groups like Crossroads don't have to file reports in the same way that party committees and campaigns do. In fact, there are a lot of rules that we have to follow that groups like American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS get to flaunt. Crossroads GPS doesn't have to disclose the identities of their donors, and neither group has a limit on how much money they can take from an individual or corporation. They take a LOT of advantage of those loopholes. In 2012, Crossroads GPS raised $180 million from 291 anonymous donors. That's right -- 2-9-1. Not 291,000, or 2.91 million. I mean, 291 is fewer than the number of people who will (hopefully!) contribute to support Democrats today. So how do you raise that much money off so few people? You have your donors contribute an average of $618,000, and get an especially big fish to contribute $22.5 million. You know, I deal with numbers a lot, and I know that it's hard to think about what $22.5 million looks like. So here's the difference between that contribution, and the single highest contribution the DNC is allowed to receive: To be honest, it'd make my job a lot easier if I could just call up someone and get them to give us $22.5 million in one fell swoop. But I'd rather do it our way, because we're building this organization from the ground up -- Democrats are accountable to you, and not to anonymous millionaires and billionaires who donate mind-boggling amounts of money to washed-up political strategists.
