Adtran lays groundwork for superfast broadband over copper
Telecom equipment vendor Adtran has developed a technology that will make it easier for operators to roll out broadband speeds close to 500Mbps over copper lines. The conventional wisdom is that copper is dying out and fiber is ascending. However, the cost of rolling out fiber is still too high for many operators, which instead want to upgrade their existing copper networks (and in some cases fiber simply can't be installed). So there is still a need for technologies that can make use of copper networks and complement fiber. Read More

Looking to the Horizon: SDN
Software-defined networking is one of the hottest buzzwords of 2014, but saying exactly what SDN is can be a challenge. SDN has its roots in the early 1990s, when both network managers and service providers began to express frustration with typical network architectures that inhibited innovation and change Learn More

Brocade pitches open networking to cash-strapped feds
If storage and compute power can be purchased on a usage-based pricing model, like a utility, then why can't networking follow the same path? Moreover, why shouldn't that network run on an open architecture that fosters competition among multiple service providers? That's Brocade's pitch to the federal government – a market that the networking vendor is targeting aggressively in its bid to gain share from its larger rival Cisco Systems. Read More

Industry standards for secure network access
I'm amused at how often I hear negative comments about proprietary enhancements from Cisco. I am one of many (many, many, many) employees of Cisco who is actively involved in standards body organizations, including the IETF. Many of today's networking standards started out as proprietary solutions that were available years prior to the standards being completed. Read More
