Five years ago I worked as a short term missionary in Haiti. In order to subsidize US rice farmers, the United States had just donated a massive amount of rice to Haiti. Our Government had great intentions and fed many hungry people.
But here's the rub. Haitian rice farmers could no longer sell a product that was being given away for free. Many of the farmers were financially devastated and did not plant for several years. Haiti's food shortages and hunger were made worse by our good deed.
The only lasting solutions are ones that make people self sufficient. Thanks to your support, we have been able to plant over 100,000 fruit trees in deforested countries, in addition to many other exciting projects. | Last year We were asked to help Frontiers International. They work with persecuted groups like Sudanese refuges and Christians in countries like Iraq, Syria and Pakistan.
My son and I visited one of their groups in India, near the Pakistan border. Christians living in these Muslim areas face discrimination and are often forced to become independent through farming or entrepreneurship.
This was before ISIS, which has raised persecution to horrific new levels. 1.8 million refugees have fled their homes in the Middle East. This includes Christians, Kurds and Shiite Muslims. | Many refugees Are cut off from aid. The ones that are getting through are helped by groups like The UN Refugee Agency, Doctors Without Borders, World Vision and Samaritan's Purse.
These are all Agencies that we helped this year. You may have other causes close to your heart. It could be helping children, the hungry, the elderly, animals, fighting disease or other worthwhile pursuits.
