1. Cloud Storage: Good or Bad for Business?
---------------------------------------------------------

In the consumer space, cloud storage is becoming more and more popular as computer users entrust their files to services such as SkyDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. They're becoming used to being able to access their music, pictures and documents from any device. And they want to be able to carry that over to the business world, too.

Many users want to access their personal cloud storage accounts from their work devices, whether working remotely or connected to the company network. That can raise some obvious security issues. For example, last year a Dropbox employee's account password was stolen <http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9229856/Dropbox_blames_employee_account_breach_for_spam_attack> and a number of Dropbox users' email addresses were compromised, resulting in an onslaught of spam messages to those users. Users of Amazon's Simple Storage Service found their data's setting had been switched from "private" to "public," exposing confidential company records to be viewed by unauthorized persons. <http://inbound.nowitworks.com/blog/bid/282135/Cloud-Storage-Risks-and-Security-Issues-for-Web-Based-Storage>

When it comes to security, all cloud storage services are not created equal. Some verify the email addresses of new customers and some do not. Some use SSL/TLS to protect data in transport while others use proprietary protocols. Some use client-side encryption so that the provider can't read the data, while others don't. Some encrypt file names, others don't. Some prevent search engines from accessing shared workspaces and others don't. Some of these problems can be addressed by users (for instance, having them encrypt their data before uploading it to the storage service).

Security isn't the only potential drawback to cloud storage. Reliability is also an issue. Service downtime could affect productivity if business data that's stored in the cloud becomes unavailable for a significant period of time. Then there's the bandwidth factor. Constantly moving files to and from the cloud is hard on a metered or capped Internet connection, and even if you have unlimited transfer, it can clog up a slow connection. Of course, the typical Internet connection is much slower than the gigabit speeds of most local networks today, so accessing cloud data will be slower than accessing data that's stored locally.

Despite these issues, the convenience factor of cloud storage can be compelling. It makes it easier to access your data when and where you want it, and it makes it easier to collaborate with other members of your team and share files, without overloading email accounts with large attachments.

Some businesses are embracing cloud storage, with small companies tending to utilize the same services mentioned above and larger organizations sometimes opting for more enterprise-targeted options such as Box or IBM's and EMC's solutions. Costs range from free (for a limited amount of storage space) to several hundred dollars per year for "team" plans that provide relatively large amounts of storage space for a group of users.

A good policy is to restrict users to using only the company-provided/approved cloud storage service to share or store files related to work when connected to your network, and block access to consumer cloud storage services that they may be using at home. You can blacklist those sites or use DNS entries to block users from accessing the sites via the web. You can also use software restriction policies to prevent them from installing client applications for accessing their files on the consumer cloud storage services.

Do you allow users to store and access data in the cloud? What cloud storage provider(s) have you tried and what do you like or not like about each? What do you see as the biggest advantage and the biggest disadvantage of using cloud storage? Let me know what you think!

‘til next time,

4. Administrator KB Tip of the Month
---------------------------------------------------------

Verifying Active Directory Schema

The Dsquery.exe command-line tool can be used to verify whether Adprep has extended your forest's schema. For example, let's say your existing forest has domain controllers running Windows Server 2008 R2. To determine the current schema level of your forest, open a command prompt on one of your domain controllers and run the following command:

dsquery * cn=schema,cn=configuration,dc=fabrikam,dc=com -scope base -attr objectVersion

The output from this command looks like this:

objectVersion
47

Now take a server running Windows Server 2012, join it to a domain in your forest, and use Server Manager to promote the server to a domain controller. After you finish introducing the new domain controller into your forest, re-run the preceding dsquery command on the domain controller you previously ran it on. The output from the command looks like this:

objectVersion
56

The version number 56 indicates that the schema of your forest has been extended to include domain controllers running Windows Server 2012.

7. Ask Sgt. Deb
---------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION:

Hey Deb,

I was talking to somebody the other day about Windows Server 2012 R2 and he said something about a new feature called "Work Folders" â€" but didn't know a whole lot about it. Can you give me some idea of what Work Folders are all about? I think they could be useful from what little I know.

Thanks! â€" Mandy.

ANSWER:

Hi Mandy,

Work Folders is a way to make information on the corporate network available to your users regardless of their locations and what devices they're working on. Work folders are also designed to make sure that information isn't compromised or leaked when accessed on various devices. With Work Folders you can:

- Provide a single point of access to work files on a user's work and personal PCs and devices (Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, with immediate plans to follow up with Windows 7 and iPad support as well as other devices in the future).
- Access work files while offline and sync with the central file server when the PC or device next has Internet or network connectivity.
- Maintain data encryption in transit as well as at rest on devices and allow corporate data wipe through device management services such as Windows Intune.
- Use existing file server management technologies such as file classification and folder quotas to manage user data.
- Specify security policies to instruct user PCs and devices to encrypt Work Folders and use a lock screen password, for example.
- Use Failover Clustering with Work Folders to provide high-availability solution.

For more information on Work Folders check out Work Folders Overview on TechNet. <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265974.aspx>

1. Firewalls in Hybrid IT
-----------------------------------------------------------

If you had a chance to go to TechEd this year, or watch the recorded sessions online, you probably noticed that it was a very "cloudy" event. While this was also the case to a large extent with TechEd last year, there was a discernible difference. The cloud talk has changed from discussions about private cloud and public cloud to one that is focused on hybrid cloud. Indeed, most of this year's sessions included at least a mention of hybrid cloud. It was clear that Microsoft sees the future of IT as a hybrid IT environment, where some of your computing assets will be on-premises and some of them will be located in a public cloud service provider's network.

I agree with Microsoft that this movement toward hybrid IT is inevitable. While some small and midsized organizations might be able to move all of their IT infrastructure to a public cloud infrastructure services provider or a SaaS provider, enterprise IT organizations are likely going to need to keep much of their data and computing resources on-premises. However, enterprise IT will actively seek out opportunities to save money and increase agility by adopting public cloud service provider offerings.

But what about network security? Especially when considering the user of a public cloud infrastructure service provider's IaaS offering, you need to consider the security implications of connecting your network to the public cloud infrastructure service provider's network. Before you connect your network to the public cloud network, there are some things you need to think about and questions you need to answer, which include the following:

- Are you going to allow all traffic from the on-premises network to the IaaS network, or are you going to limit which resources and protocols can be used to connect to the IaaS network?
- Are you going to allow all traffic from the public cloud infrastructure service provider's network to your on-premises network? If not, which compute resources and protocols will you allow access to your on-premises network?
- How are you going to handle name resolution? Do you plan to use DNS services provided by your IaaS provider or DNS services on the corporate network that you will extend to the public cloud service providers network?

Of course, these are only a few of the many questions that you need to ask â€" but the key takeaway here is that you will need to consider some type of network access control between the on-premises network and the public cloud infrastructure service provider's network. That means you'll likely want to configure your firewall, whether it's a TMG firewall or a replacement, on your on-premises network to make sure that only that traffic you want is able to move to and from the public cloud infrastructure services provider's network.

There are a number of other firewall, access control and networking issues that you need to consider when designing a hybrid IT environment, as well. If you'd like to know more about the subject, check out the Hybrid IT Infrastructure Design Considerations Guide for Enterprise IT <http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18120.hybrid-it-infrastructure-design-considerations-for-enterprise-it.aspx>, over on the TechNet Wiki, which was written by none other than my husband, Tom Shinder.

See you next month! â€" Deb.

4. ISA/TMG/UAG Content of the Month
---------------------------------------------------------------

DirectAccess is one of the sterling remote access technologies that you get with Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012. With DirectAccess, users don't have to start a VPN client to get access to the corporate network. All they need to do is start the computer â€" they don't even need to log on. Similarly, corporate IT can access all the DirectAccess clients so that they can be managed and serviced without having to wait for the user to come to the corporate network or connect via VPN. However, if you have a TMG firewall at the edge of your network, there are going to be some things you'll need to consider when deploying DirectAccess. Marc Grote discusses these issues in his article that's titled Implementing Windows Server 2012 DirectAccess behind Forefront TMG (Part 2).

5. Tip of the Month
--------------------------------------------------------------

High availability for your TMG firewall is job one. If your firewall is down, then your users are going to be out of commission until you get things fixed. We know that you can ensure HA by using NLB and putting together a network load balanced array of TMG firewalls. But did you know that you can also have high availability for your Internet connectivity too? You bet! The TMG firewall supports multiple ISP connections for your TMG firewall, so that if one of the connections goes down, you're still up and running. Check out the article Keeping High Availability with Forefront TMG's ISP Redundancy Feature for the details:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/isablog/archive/2009/02/16/keeping-high-availability-with-forefront-tmg-s-isp-redundancy-feature.aspx

6. ISA/TMG/IAG/UAG Link of the Month
--------------------------------------------------------------

I've always found the TMG firewall to be very stable. Rarely has the firewall service gone down and I can't think of a time where it's failed on several consecutive occasions. But, different deployment configurations may be more or less stable. If you've had the unfortunate experience of having the TMG firewall service fail on you more than three times, you might have noticed that it doesn't restart the service a fourth time, in spite of the fact that if you look at the Recovery tab for the service it says that it should keep on restarting. What's up with that? To find out about this phenomenon, check out the TMG Firewall Team's blog post at http://blogs.technet.com/b/isablog/archive/2013/06/10/tmg-service-recovery-actions.aspx

Hi, Ron.

This isn't something that I've seen very often. However, there is one situation that I once saw that is related to setting up a site to site VPN connection using IPsec tunnel mode. If the TMG firewall is configured to connect to another VPN gateway using IPsec tunnel mode, you might find that the PPTP VPN client will no longer be able to connect to external VPN servers. If you recently configured the TMG firewall to establish a site to site VPN connection using IPsec tunnel mode, then you'll need to install Rollup 3 for TMG Service Pack 2. I'm asking you

Joe --

There is only so much I can do on my own.

The special interests know it, and they're counting on you to be silent on gun violence and climate change. They hope you're not paying attention to creating jobs or fixing our broken immigration system.

And they plan to make the loudest noise when your members of Congress come home for August recess.

I'm counting on you to be just as vocal -- to make sure the agenda that Americans voted for last year is front and center.

Say you'll do at least one thing as part of OFA's Action August in your community, no matter where you live.

I know it's easy to get frustrated by the pace of progress.

But it's not a reason to sit back and do nothing -- our system only works if you play your part.

If you don't let your representatives know where you stand in August, we risk losing an important battle on your home turf.

So I'm asking you to speak up -- commit to do at least one thing in your community during Action August:

Barack
