Apple's 12-inch MacBook won't reach Thunderbolt 3 data transfer speeds
The super-slim 12-inch Apple MacBook brought a radical design change to laptops with its USB Type-C port, but it won’t support faster Thunderbolt 3 data transfers.Intel at Computex announced Thunderbolt 3 that can transfer data between computers and external peripherals at speeds of 40Gbps, the fastest among connector technologies today. The technology is two times faster than its predecessor, Thunderbolt 2, which is in many Macs today. The biggest changes in Thunderbolt 3 is support for the USB protocol and a move away from proprietary connectors to souped-up USB Type-C ports and cables. Computers could have similar looking USB Type-C and Thunderbolt ports, the latter distinguished by the Thunderbolt logo.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Faster Wi-Fi is coming soon to a device near you
Wi-Fi in your home or office could get a big speed boost by the end of this year with Qualcomm's newest chip, which reaches new highs in data transfer speeds. The peak wireless data transfer speeds of the QCA9994 and QCA9984 Wi-Fi chips will reach 1.7G bps (bits per second). That speed can be achieved through single or multiple data streams from devices on an 802.11ac Wi-Fi network.MORE: Full speed ahead for 802.11ac WiFiThe speed tops Qualcomm's previous high of around 1Gbps, which it achieved in products released last year. To put the wireless speed in perspective, the data transfer speeds of a wired USB 3.0 connection peaks at 5Gbps, which in most cases is considered adequate for external hard drives. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Apple may have a 2-in-1 in the works
Is Apple planning some variation of a 2-in-1 device that would combine the iPad with a detachable keyboard? It's not completely far-fetched.If Apple did so, it would be keeping with a growing industry trend, analysts said. Apple wouldn't comment on this story, but that hasn't kept people from speculating.Of course, the iPad already works with various Bluetooth keyboards, including Apple's own and those from some third-party manufacturers. There are also various covers that can double as a way to prop up the tablet.+ ALSO: 20 best iPhone/iPad games +To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

11 geek-thrilling glimpses of vintage tech in American Genius: Jobs vs. Gates
Acting: bad. Hardware: heavenly. It was the hardware that kept my eyes glued to the American Genius: Jobs vs. Gates documentary that aired Monday night. Someone did a good job of collecting vintage PCs and other high tech of 30-plus years ago for the show. These machines shared the screen with (and sometimes upstaged) the unknown actors in this unremarkable dramatization. We saw Apple and IBM hardware, of course, but also other old names, like Altair and Digital Equipment Corporation and—Zenith Data Systems?! Oh, the memories! To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Intel shows first Skylake tablet
Intel is drumming up excitement for its upcoming chips code-named Skylake, showing the first tablet based on the architecture during a keynote at the Computex show in Taipei. The tablet had a 4K display that could display images at a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels, and was 7.8 millimeters thick.Tablets based on Skylake will be computing powerhouses that will manage high-resolution displays, said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager for the PC Client Group at Intel.Skylake will go into tablets, laptops and desktops, including some that are on track to reach the market in the second half this year.Devices based on Skylake could incorporate a number of interesting features, including wireless charging and, in some mobile devices, Thunderbolt 3.0 ports. These will be able transfer data at 40Gbps (bits per second), close to twice the transfer speed of Thunderbolt 2.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Polar Beat is the best app for real-time heart rate monitoring
My top exercise goal is to keep my heart rate in my peak zone for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. Despite the seemingly endless array of activity tracking apps and devices I've used, however, I had never found anything that made it easy to know exactly how long I am in my peak zone while I'm exercising.Fortunately, that's changed thanks to the free Polar Beat Android and iOS apps.
