Microsoft Defaults to XML in Office 12
Microsoft announced today that it will be introducing new XML-based file formats for three core Office applications in the next version of its productivity suite, currently called Microsoft Office 12. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will all default to storing files in Microsoft Office OpenXML format. To denote the new format, Microsoft will append an "x" to the file extensions: .DOCX for Word; .XLSX for Excel; and .PPTX for PowerPoint. Files stored in these formats will actually be compressed ZIP files that include the underlying XML and any images used in the document. Microsoft contends that the new format will tend to make documents smaller and provide better error recovery. Read this story



Gateway Refreshes Ultraportable
Gateway has refreshed its ultraportable line with the release of the M250 Series. It's the company's first upgrade since the M210. The M250 maintains an ideal size for travel, tipping the scales at just 4.8 pounds. Its 14.1-inch widescreen is large enough to handle all your visual tasks, and the machine comes with a full-size keyboard. The M250 Series also promises stability with consistent software images and hardware platforms. Read this story



Dell Adds to Optiplex Desktop Line
Dell has announced two new additions to its corporate Optiplex desktop line: the GX520 and the GX620. The GX620 ($579 direct) will be the higher-end solution, targeted at investment protection. It will be available in four different chassis sizes, including ultrasmall. Specs will include Pentium 4 and Celeron D processors, with plans for future implementation of Pentium D dual-core processors; Microsoft Windows XP64 support; PCIe x16 graphics; and TPM 1.2 security. The GX520 ($549), a more mainstream solution, will come in three chassis sizes, though not ultrasmall. It will offer Intel Pentium 4 or Celeron D processors, SATA II technology, and Intel GMA 950 graphics. Read this story



Netscape 8 May Give Green Light to Spyware Sites
From eWeek: A new version of the Netscape Web browser is being criticized by spyware experts for failing to notify Web surfers when they're visiting Web sites that distribute the harmful monitoring programs. Netscape 8's Trust Rating System, which warns users about insecure Web sites, gives a "green light" to some Web sites that download spyware onto users' machines, according to Ben Edelman, a student at Harvard University Law School and an expert on spyware software.
