McAfee Security Brief * September 2007

4 Additional Microsoft Vulnerabilities Disclosed
============================================================
What Is This About?
Microsoft has released four security bulletins -- one
"critical" and three "important" (MS07-051 to MS07-054)
-- covering 4 separate vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilites
affect the following operating systems/operating system
components: Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Service Pack 2,
Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows Vista, Windows
Services for Unix, and Subsystem for Unix-based Applications.
Other affected software include: MSN Messenger and Windows
Live Messenger.
General risks consist of:
o Loss of personal data
o Remote system access by cyber criminals
o "Drive by" downloads of malware and other unauthorized
programs
o Elevation of privilege

How This Affects You
McAfee customers with our latest, updated anti-virus,
firewall and anti-spyware security software, such as
VirusScan(r) Plus, are protected from the combined
threats posed by these vulnerabilities.
"Users of Windows Server 2000 Service Pack 4 should be
paying most attention to Microsoft's patches. The MSN Messenger
and Windows Live Messenger vulnerability is also serious,
but since Microsoft pushes the updates there is little chance
of successful attacks exploiting this vulnerability," said
Dave Marcus, security research and communications manager
at McAfee Avert Labs.
Ongoing Microsoft vulnerabilities underscore the need to
1) Regularly update your operating system with the latest
patches, and 2) Maintain active virus, hacker, spyware and
other identity theft protection.
Fortify Your Protection
McAfee customers with standalone anti-virus or anti-spyware
software are strongly advised to install 1) a firewall with
inbound and outbound protection, and 2) safe surfing
protection. Both are included with VirusScan Plus or
Internet Security Suite.
