Sony: wishing to be in a different world? Clearly there are many places that are essentially Internet-free, but the Internet is a major factor in most of the developed world. Not everyone is all that happy with the impact. Dictators are threatened by the Internet as an information channel, moralists decry the availability of porn, regulators are scared of the unpredictability of innovation and some businesses have trouble understanding or dealing with the shifting technology. Sprint: Buy the Palm Pre! Just not right away! You can't make this stuff up. The day Sprint tells us when the pretty highly anticipated Palm Pre will go on sale, and what it will cost, is the same day Sprint warns everyone who might want to buy it that they might not be able to, because there won't be enough to go around. iPhone - Buy Early and Often Is the iPhone the only handset that matters? Maybe. Last night we held a wireless and mobile session at the Interop 2009 Unconference, which is essentially a two-hour, beer-fueled, vigorous discussion of what real IT practitioners (the participants) are doing in enterprises large and small. Interop 2009 - Two Big Questions I am once again very pleased to have the opportunity to Chair the Mobile Business Conference at Interop 2009 in Las Vegas, going on this week. This is the wireless and mobile part of the one of the largest independent business technology events in the world. Someone once said that this conference would be COMDEX if we just added PCs, which we wouldn't, of course, and, regardless, this is a much more technical IT event than COMDEX ever was. Change, The Constant In The IT Workplace Today's job market, especially in IT-related jobs, is increasingly difficult. In comparison with other industries and professions, IT is still one of the strongest areas in terms of job growth, salary, and overall need. What's often left out of the news and analysis of the IT sector, is the ultimate need of adaptability, constant skill improvement and refinement, and optimism about the future. The Value of Information One of my favorite stories (stop me if you've heard this one before) concerns an aged power station. One day the station failed, leaving the small town it served completely without electricity. The town managers called in several engineers, none of whom could resolve the problem the station's equipment was older than anything they had worked with before. 45 minutes of Interop podcasty goodness I've wrapped up my podcast audio interviews here at Interop Las Vegas 2009, here's a list of all of the five interviews we did at the show. Embedded intelligent networks are mushrooming One area I'm paying a lot of attention to these days is what I'm calling "embedded intelligent networks," or networks that integrate seamlessly into physical reality, enabling us to monitor and ultimately manipulate the real world across the net.
