Yahoo! Buys VoIP Provider, Blog Update Service From eWeek: In a spree of acquisitions, Yahoo! is laying the groundwork to make its instant-messaging service work with traditional phone networks and for the company to play a bigger role in distributing weblog updates. Yahoo! officials confirmed two separate acquisitions--its purchase of Dialpad Communications, a consumer Internet telephony provider, and its addition of the syndication-feed pinging service blogs. SanDisk Brings Cheap USB Drive to Drugstores SanDisk announced that it will be supplementing its low-cost Shoot & Store line with the new 32MB Cruzer Mini USB 2.0 flash drive. The Cruzer Mini will carry a $12.99 list price and will be available in select drugstores and supermarkets starting in June. "The fact that we're offering USB flash drives in the food and drug channel at this low price highlights how mainstream digital technology has become in consumers' lives," said Nelson Chan, general manager of SanDisk's consumer and handset business. Messaging Haze Does the constant barrage of e-mail, instant messages, and cell-phone calls hurt or help productivity? There are many ways to measure that, but a new study from England found strong evidence that constant interruptions reduce mental acuity. The study, commissioned by Hewlett-Packard, focused on 1,100 Britons and was conducted by TNS Research. As part of the research, Dr. Glenn Wilson, a psychiatrist at King's College London, tracked the IQ of workers throughout the day in 80 clinical trials. He found that the IQ of those who tried to juggle messages and work fell by 10 points--more than double the 4-point fall seen after smoking marijuana. Read this story
