Today's focus: Check Point and Nokia join forces to offer VPN
gateway for midsize businesses

Check Point and Nokia are combining their software and hardware
to offer midsized businesses a VPN gateway that supports SSL and
IPSec VPNs.

Called the Nokia IP 260 and IP 265, the former with a hard drive
and the latter with flash memory, support up to 500 end users.

The software on the devices is Check Point's Express, a bundle
of Check Point security features more sophisticated than the
company's small-business gear but less complex and less
expensive than its large-business packages.

The two devices can be upgraded with add-ons, including support
for SSL VPNs that can be used for remote access.

The devices come packaged with the Check Point license included
in the purchase price, something that will simplify life for
customers. Buying an appliance from one customer but having to
deal with another to pay license fees is a headache no IT
department needs, but particularly those in smaller businesses
where IT staff may be in short supply.

Nokia's Web-based management platform can be used to manage the
devices remotely and set security parameters.

Check Point came out with the Express bundle of features two
years ago in an effort to give businesses without the financial
resources of the larger corporations a set of firewall-VPN
features they could afford. The software can be purchased
separately and deployed on Windows, Linux and Sun servers.

Prices for the two boxes range from about $4,800 to about
$9,000, depending on what options customers buy and how many
end-user licenses they sign up for.
