Security architecture emerges for first responders, 11/01/07: Princeton University researchers say they have come up with a new way to securely transmit crucial rescue information to first responders to situations such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks.

One in six PCs could be infected with malware, 11/01/07: As many as one in six PCs may have active spyware or malware infections. A recent study performed by U.K. security vendor Prevx of 300,000 PCs showed that 15.6 % of those machines had at least one active spyware or malware program installed. These programs, which include keyboard loggers that record keystrokes, information stealers and fake antispyware, are emerging at rates of 5,000 to 10,000 per day, company officials say.

IRS issues e-mail scam alert: The IRS Friday warned the Internet community of a new scam e-mail that appears to be a solicitation from the IRS and the U.S. government for charitable contributions to victims of the recent Southern California wildfires has been making the rounds. In some cases in an effort to appear legitimate, the bogus e-mails include text from an actual speech about the wildfires by a member of the California Assembly.

Microsoft’s SCCM upgrade tackles NAC integration, 11/01/07: Microsoft will ship on Nov. 12 its revamped Systems Management Server, now called System Center Configuration Manager 2007, and with it will ship the first piece of the company’s integration between its management platform and its network-access-control technology, Network Access Protection, which verifies that a client desktop is secure before it's let onto a network The software will be unveiled at Microsoft’s TechEd IT Forum in Barcelona.
