Cool Tools: CES remains cool despite cooling economy Keith Shaw Tons of new products are being announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Here are a couple of trends and products that piqued my interest. 'Net Insider: The CAN-SPAM Act as a warning Scott Bradner It is widely expected that the new Congress and administration will be passing a lot of regulations to deal with all sorts of perceived problems. Guest Column: 5 (More) Favorite Gmail Add-Ons Last month, I reviewed my five favorite Gmail add-ons, which included helpful widgets that you could easily embed in the screen real-estate surrounding your inbox. You can access all of them from Gmail labs, a service that lets you test (and use) these additional features while they're being tweaked by the developers at Google. (To access labs, click on the green beaker in the upper right side of Gmail, near where your e-mail address appears in bold lettering). Guest Column: 10 Things That WON'T Happen in 2009 Predicting the future is a futile exercise but there are some things that never seem to change year after year even though every effort is made by security professionals to raise awareness and reduce the risk. The list below is not unfamiliar to IT administrators and it is really a checklist of those security issues that resurface every year and are never completely dealt with. Guest Column: Mobile Evolution Helping to Redefine 'Workplace' This year, for the first time ever, more people in the world will have a mobile phone than a land line. Mobile devices outnumber personal computers by three to one, credit cards by two to one and TVs by two to one (although not at my house!). IBM's Institute for Business Value predicted the number of mobile Internet users will grow 191 percent from 2006 to 2011, to reach a billion. Small Business Tech: New Year's Resolution: Collaborate or else James Gaskin It's a new year, so let's make some resolutions. Sure, you do it every January and little happens, but this year will be different. This year, the tightening economy will force people to pay more attention, watch what their customers and competitors are doing and look for an edge. Collaboration will give you that edge. Backspin: COBOL and governmental efficiencies Gibbs The new U.S. administration has a new post, chief performance officer. Mark Gibbs thinks that the incumbent has his work cut out for him and that government computing is a key area to tackle. It's a dirty job but someone has to do it. Gearhead: Malwarebytes finds pesky Trojan Gibbs The last Gearhead column wherein Gibbs discovered that his Windows XP machine was acting weirdly generated a huge amount of reader feedback and one recommendation -- using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware -- worked where many others hadn't. Eye on the Carriers: An accuracy check on last year's predictions Johnson Here's a look at how well Eye on the Carrier was able to call some of the most significant developments of 2008. Guest Column: Ice Storms: 5 Lessons for IT and Telecommuters When I woke up on Friday, Dec. 12, our house in southeastern New Hampshire was dark. The previous evening an ice storm coated trees, roads and power lines with a layer of ice at least a quarter-inch thick. Tree branches-and whole trunks-snapped, taking vulnerable power lines with them. By Friday morning, with the storm ongoing, blackouts had hit hundreds of thousands of households and businesses in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York, including mine. User View: A new year and a new journey In my previous column, I used Ian Fleming's image of the waiting platform for the Orient Express -- which he described as "throbbing with the tragic poetry of departure" -- as a metaphor for the feelings of emptiness, sadness and loneliness we have when we separate from friends and co-workers. |
