Best hypervisors for the desktop
Desktop hypervisors offer companies a way to run multiple operating systems, and the applications tied to them, on a single client machine.

Dell Latitude 2100 Netbook
Families, don't be surprised if you see the Dell Latitude 2100 show up in a classroom near you. As I've written in the past, Dell is aggressively targeting the K-8 education market with this line of rugged-looking netbooks. At the time I played with a preview unit, the machine seemed good. But now, a final review model has passed through the PC World Test Center, and it's time to grade its performance.

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2009 Suite
Hard Disk Manager 2009 Suite is a welcome upgrade of an already capable partitioning and imaging suite from Paragon Software. The latest version includes updated driver support and a slew of new features. Two of the additions--the ability to back up individual files and folders, and diverse hardware restore--are particularly useful.

Samsung Go Netbook
As much as I like what Samsung is doing with its new Go netbook (known as the N310 overseas), the company is about this close to surpassing Asus as the king of the shotgun-delivery method, releasing netbooks every 2 minutes. Never mind my cattiness, though. The Go is a stylish and far-from-subdued portable that's shaped like a big rubber pebble. In fact, I'd say that this colorful competitor could match Dell's run on the classroom with the Latitude 2100.

Motorola Evoke Q4A Cell Phone
The Motorola Evoke Q4A ($280 with no contract; as of 7/28/09), from pay-as-you-go carrier Cricket, has a sleek slider design and a few smartphone-like features such as a full HTML browser and a widget-based user interface. Unfortunately, unlike a more advanced phone or a smartphone, the Q4A doesn't have a whole lot of room for customization, and its performance can be painfully slow.

HP Mini 5101
HP pioneered the notion of transforming a netbook into a corporate raider. The idea seems like a budget-conscious no-brainer now, but 18 months ago the HP Mini 2133 was a wolf pack of one. Since then, the netbook market has evolved--and so have HP's entries in it. The Mini 5101 is a smart update, with slickly styled lines, a batch of business-ready apps, and finally a serviceable touchpad.

F-Secure Online Backup
F-Secure Online Backup (pricing varies with plan) is a stable, easy-to-set-up backup solution along the lines of Mozy and SpiderOak. I found a lot to like, especially from my perspective as a more experienced user. Features such as manual operation, upload speeds couched in terms of Kbps, and the option to define how long locally deleted files remain in the backup definitely appeal to the advanced user. That said, there are still plenty of friendly beginner features such as the automatic selection of important data files.
