How Data Tiering Can Lower IT Storage Costs - Solving the Problems of "Big" Data Growth
by Will McGrath
The explosion of data growth created by next-gen instruments has caused tremendous challenges in handling and storing those files. While growth in structured and semi-structured data — like e-mail and databases — continues to grow, it is really unstructured "big" data growth that is causing the biggest problems. This is true in verticals like oil and gas with upstream seismic and interpretation applications or in life sciences with a number of newer instruments being introduced for electron microscopy, high content screening / high throughput screening and flow cytometry — or especially, next generation sequencing.

LTFS is More than an Acronym
The Benefits of Implementing LTFS
Recently, Quantum attended the DV Expo and IBC tradeshows where we participated in the LTO Consortium's booth and demonstrated LTFS technology. LTFS is a new technology that enables customers to store their data on tape without the use of backup software and can drag and drop files directly to tape. The key benefits of tape, such as low cost, high reliability and portability have typically been available only for customers who use backup software; now they are available to LTFS users as well.

Get Your Backup Score – a New Tool for IT Professionals to Determine how their Backup Stacks Up
GetYourBackupScore.com is the website that helps IT departments improve data protection by comparing their backup results to industry best practices and to their peers. The core concept is your backup score—it's based on your responses to 8 key topics around your organization's backup, restore, DR, and retention practices. All you do is answer the questions. Your score will be computed and you'll receive a report of your score as well as suggestions for how you might be able to improve.

Get Detailed Reports. The detailed free report compares the responses in each of the eight specific topic areas to what your peers report and to the results of the most effective IT departments and provides more detailed suggestions about possible approaches to improve.

Quantum is a launch sponsor of GetYourBackupScore.com and is providing this link to the Beta version. Be one of the first to use this new tool, help expand the database of best practices, and provide valuable feedback.
