| Substation synchrophasor measurements require microsecond time stamp accuracy to be correlated and analyzed. The Precision Time Protocol (PTP) is the solution. Control centers need to monitor and react to real-time conditions of the grid. Wide Area Measurement Systems gather data from substations located across a whole region, but turning the massive amount of collected data into actionable information depends on precise time stamps for each measured value. IEC 61850 establishes a standard for substation automation, and critical measurements require microsecond accuracy. The IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) delivers accurate time to Intelligent Electronic Devices. To ensure a compatible infrastructure and timing consistency for all of the equipment, the IEEE developed the Power Profile to standardize the use of PTP in these applications.
