Today's focus: Vendors vaunt VoIP values via VoiceCon venue

By Steve Taylor and Larry Hettick

It was a busy week for enterprise VoIP infrastructure suppliers
at the recent VoiceCon Fall conference and trade show in San
Diego. Here are some of the show highlights and announcements.

3Com introduced a set of VoIP applications for large enterprises
that enable secure remote access; the products are based on
Ingate Systems' technology and are offered as part of 3Com's IP
Telecommuting module. The Ingate technology solves the far-end
Network Address Translation traversal issues inherent in SIP
communications.

Avaya won the "Best of VoiceCon" award with its showcase. Avaya
demonstrated how companies use applications like conferencing,
collaboration, wireless, video and speech-enabled self-service
and messaging to change the way they communicate and serve
customers.

Ericsson launched an IP telephony system, a stand-alone version
of its MX-ONE IP. The system is a fully featured IP-PBX.

ShoreTel unveiled its ShoreTel6 PBX. Enhancements include SIP
support, integrated software distribution, media encryption, and
some additional mobility applications. The company also launched
some new IP phones and announced partnerships to expand its SIP
offerings.

Siemens Communications announced Version 4.0 of its HiPath
Xpressions unified messaging product

The enhancements allow deployment across both Siemens and
non-Siemens network infrastructures, and include a
speech-recognition command module and other mobility features.
