Network World to test Enterprise UTM devices

Network World

Product Test and Buyer's Guide

Product Test and Buyer's Guide, 06/21/07

By Christine Burns

Last week, we issued an invitation to all enterprise unified threat management (UTM) vendors to participate in a Clear Choice Test being conducted by Network World Lab Alliance member Joel Snyder. The call for products was specifically issued for UTM firewall wares that are designed to meet enterprise needs in large data centers and are going to be deployed near the periphery of the network.

As in all Network World tests, we will be combining objective results, such as performance and interoperability testing results, with subjective evaluation of the features, manageability, and usability of the products.

Our performance testing will use industry-standard laboratory testing hardware from Spirent Communications. Our interoperability testing will use existing installed devices from Cisco, Enterasys, Extreme, and Nokia (Snyder has posted a full test methodology here.)

From deployable IP-PBX systems to unified messaging, Network World has detailed information on hundreds of products. Side-by-side comparisons along with objective test and review results make it quick and easy to find the solutions that are right for your enterprise.

Our primary goal here is not to rank products (although we will effectively do that with our standard Scorecard presentation), but to offer our readers an intelligent discussion of the features that differentiate products, and to point out critical issues in evaluation of this product category. We also want to share the results of our testing with readers, so that they can shorten their own buying cycle by not having to start from scratch when evaluating products.

We plan to publish the results of this testing in October. If you need to research UTM devices before that point, I can point you to the Network World’s UTM Buyer’s Guide where you can find detailed information on over 20 products. The interface allows users to search, filter and compare their options.
