Former AT&T CEO Whitacre to chair GM board
General Motors announced Tuesday that it would appoint former AT&T CEO Edward Whitacre as its new chairman after it emerges from bankruptcy. GM filed bankruptcy protection earlier this month as part of the Obama Administration's plan to remake the automaker into a profitable company that sells more environmentally friendly vehicles. Whitacre will succeed former chairman Rick Wagoner, who resigned under pressure from the government in March.

Alliance advocates standard for HDTV-based video surveillance
A recently formed group has proposed a standard for high-definition video surveillance systems that allows HDTV signals to be transmitted digitally over conventional closed-circuit TV media without packetization.

Cisco sees video goldmine
Cisco this week released an internally conducted study that finds that global IP traffic will increase fivefold by 2013. Cisco's Visual Networking Index (VNI) says the growth is attributable to new forms and expanded usage of interactive media, and the "explosion" of video content across multiple devices.

Next targets for Cisco?
Motley Fool today had a piece quoting Cisco saying it plans to be more aggressive in M&A activity in the second half of the year than in the first, and more aggressive this year than last. Given that it's sitting on $30 billion in cash and the current economy is depressing values, it's no wonder.

Networks will offer 48/7 service by 2013, says Cisco
Forget 24/7 availability: By 2013, telecommunications operators will deliver at least 48 hours of Internet connectivity to their customers, every day of the week, according to a study by Cisco Systems.

54% of CIOs see no cuts to budget
CIOs are reporting no change in their budgets despite the recession, in response to a survey by the Gartner EXP group. Of the 900 CIOs surveyed, 54 per cent said there was no change in their budget, four per cent had seen an increase and less than half had seen a cut.
