Quantum Targets Disk-Based Backup Price-Performance Leadership with New DXi 2.0

Quantum takes aim at the disk-based backup price-performance leadership position with its most recent DXi announcement. This software release features inline deduplication with a newly-designed process control architecture delivering higher performance, enhanced overall system resource utilization, and an improved user experience through GUI enhancements at a very competitive price point. This release makes a statement: Quantum has developed an extensible methodology that takes full advantage of its multi-core, next generation hardware platforms—and it will continue to build upon this new process control architecture to meet customer needs from both a price and a performance perspective.

NASA EOSDIS Archive and StorNext
  For over 15 years NASA has used Quantum’s StorNext data management software to track satellite images of weather patterns and other various images. Linda Seitz, a subcontractor for the NASA EED Program, recently spoke about her experiences with StorNext, why they chose StorNext in the first place, and how it is being implemented today. In Search of a Long-Term Archiving Solution
The Clipper Group has released a new TCO white paper that provides a 12-year TCO analysis of tape vs. disk. The analysis shows that for long-term data retention disk-only solutions cost ~15X more than tape solutions - most of the savings come from equipment, media and maintenance costs. Power is also a key factor with disk power costs exceeding the entire cost of the tape solution. The paper stresses that the cost analysis is for long-term data retention (DR and archive). Using disk for backup offers customers many advantages and we still strongly recommend customers use disk in front of tape.
