1) How come we got attacked? Aren’t we using CloudFlare anti-DDoS?
CloudFlare only works if the attacker doesn’t know your real server IP. Since it is well known who 8chan.co’s host is, an attack is still possible.
2) When is 8chan.co coming back?
We are doing our best to bring it back, but we are not sure. We are aiming to bring 8chan.co back in the next 12 hours, but that could very easily become 24 or 48.
In the mean time, the following alternate imageboards are still up:
If 8chan.co is not back in 48 hours, I will bring up a limited version of the site on alternative hosting with only a few boards (/pol/, /v/, /gamergate/, /b/) and no board creation. I am pretty confident it will not come to that, but it would be better to have something up rather than nothing if we know the real site is going to be down for a long time (72 hours – 2 weeks).
3) Who is behind this?
No one knows, and there is no way to know.
Launching a DDoS is a crime, so attackers normally just rent botnets, use stolen credit cards to rent cloud servers, or pay someone in Bitcoin over Tor to do the attack for them to stay anonymous and not risk arrest.
It took LizardSquad attacking Microsoft and Sony for any of them to be arrested. Obviously, someone DDoSing a small community like 8chan.co is very low on the priority list for law enforcement.
Please do not believe rumors on Twitter that it was “Brianna Wu” or “Muslims” or “JIDF”. They are based on nothing and are being spread by people who want Twitter followers and nothing else. I verified it :^)
4) Can’t you just block everybody except CloudFlare in `iptables`?
That doesn’t solve anything. Blocking IPs at a server level does not stop them from using network resources. The internet is purposely engineered this way so that it can be an open platform.
5) What the fuck? Why are internet services so vulnerable to this kind of attack?
8chan.co is not the first imageboard to ever be DDoSed. 4chan has gone down to DDoS many times over the years, as have 420chan, 7chan and 2chan. http://tanasinn.info/wiki/Complete_History_of_4chan is a good history of 4chan.
Clearly, the new meme is to shut down free speech on the internet using illegal means. However, I don’t believe that these people will continue to avoid prosecution indefinitely, and after a few of them go down – they lock you up for this – things should clear up.

French police are swarming a 51-square-mile dense forest in their hunt for the Islamic terrorist brothers suspected of carrying out Wednesday’s deadly shooting massacre at the Paris office of a satirical magazine.
Authorities say the two brothers, identified as Said and Cherif Kouachi, may be hiding out in the Forêt de Retz, a vast woodland described as “larger than Paris,” Sky News reported.
The pair robbed a gas station at gun point Thursday near the small town of Villers-Cotterêts, about 40 miles northeast of Paris, a day after they opened fire inside the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people and wounding 11 others, four seriously, police said.
Two men fitting the description of the terror suspects stole gas and food from a gas station Thursday morning near the sleepy village, in the northern Aisne region, according to multiple reports. The assailants fled in a Renault Clio which had weapons on its back seat and its license plates covered, according to witnesses. The robbery suspects were described as masked, with Kalashnikovs and what appeared to be a rocket launcher, according to the AFP.
Three more women came forward Wednesday alleging that they were sexually assaulted by comedian Bill Cosby, bringing the number of women who have stepped forward with similar accusations to more than two dozen.
At the same time, Cosby’s one-time co-star, Phylicia Rashad, spoke out in defense of the comedian. Speaking to ABC News, Rashad said Cosby was being treated unfairly in the media and that he was the victim of an orchestrated attack.
The women appeared at a news conference hosted by attorney Gloria Allred, who renewed her call for Cosby to either waive the statute of limitations that blocks some women from suing the comedian or allow arbitration so that the women can be compensated.
Allred represents many of the women who claim to have been assaulted.
Mosques in two French towns were fired upon overnight, leaving no casualties, prosecutors said on Thursday.
Three blank grenades were thrown at a mosque shortly after midnight in the city of Le Mans, west of Paris. A bullet hole was also found in a window of the mosque.
In the Port-la-Nouvelle district near Narbonne in southern France, several shots were fired in the direction of a Muslim prayer hall shortly after evening prayers. The hall was empty, the local prosecutor said.
An explosion at a kebab shop near a mosque in the eastern French town of Villefranche-sur-Saone on Thursday morning also left no casualties. Local prosecutors have described it as a “criminal act”.

The upside of the Charlie Hebdo massacre – besides that it is going to finally kick off the race war from whence the fate of the Western world will be decided – is that everyone killed at the paper was a Marxist scumbag who pretty much deserved it. One of these persons was a disgusting Jew named Georges Wolinski.
Wolinski, 80, a Tunisia native who moved to France as a teenager, also was a cartoonist at the magazine and was known for his cynical and at times vulgar style. After entering journalism in the 1960s, he went on to work at leading French publications such as L'Humanite, Le Nouvel Observateur and Paris Match.
One of Wolinski's cartoons, published in a 2002 compilation of his works, shows a Muslim girl walking with her mother down a war-ravaged street in the Middle East. The daughter asks what it means to be a free woman. The mother replies by presenting her daughter with a copy of a book titled "Hello Sadness."
"It's clear that this was a planned attack against Wolinski and the other cartoon artists," said Richard Kenigsman, a well-known Jewish caricaturist and painter from Brussels. He cited an attack and multiple threats against Charlie Hebdo since 2006 for publishing caricatures deemed offensive to Islam.
Corinne Rey, a designer at the magazine, was forced under death threats to let two gunmen into the offices after she returned from bringing her daughter to kindergarten. The assailants made her punch in the security code and proceeded to shoot four caricaturists — Wolinski, Charbonnier, Jean Cabut and Bernard Verlhac — along with eight others in a gunfire spree that lasted five minutes.

Georges David Wolinski was born on June 28, 1934 in Tunis, French Tunisia. His parents, Lola Bembaron and Siegfried Wolinski, were Jewish. You would think that after this attack, Le Pen could come out and just be like “every single Arab who doesn’t renounce Islam has to get out” and win the election by default on fear alone. Just to show that the Jewish press cannot go a day without having a Nazi themed news story, today's one was about Hitler's Nazi super cows, which managed to survive the Allied destruction of all things National Socialist 70 years ago.
Hitler's drive to produce the perfect Aryan race was not confined to people – it also extended to a specially bred herd of Nazi-engineered cows, which have turned out to be so aggressive that a UK farmer has been forced to turn half of them into sausages.
Derek Gow imported more than a dozen Heck super cows to his West Devon farm in 2009, nearly a century after they were first created in the 1920s.
But, Farmer Gow, who is the only British farmer to own the breed, has been forced to kill seven of his herd because the cows were so aggressive they repeatedly tried to kill his staff.
"We have had to cut our herd down to six because some of them were incredibly aggressive and we just couldn't handle them," said Farmer Gow, who said the meat made "very tasty" sausages that tasted a bit like venison.
"The ones we had to get rid of would just attack you any chance they could. They would try to kill anyone. Dealing with that was not fun at all. They are by far and away the most aggressive animals I have ever worked with," he said.

Authorities have not said yet that the killing of a female police officer — by a man dressed, like the Charlie Hebdo attackers, in all black and apparently wearing a bulletproof vest — in the Paris suburb of Montrouge has any connection to Wednesday’s slaying of 12 people, including cartoonists who were called out by name and executed.
Nor have they confirmed French media reports that a gas station attendant near Villers-Cotterets in Aisne, the northern Picardy region of France, told police that he saw the Charlie Hebdo suspects Thursday. The men threatened the attendant and stole gas and food before heading toward Paris.
Regardless, both scenes were certainly a flurry of police activity Thursday. In Montrouge, south of Paris, that included about 20 heavily armed police at one point surrounding an apartment building and pushing back crowds. In more remote Aisne, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) northeast of the capital, the gas station was cordoned off with about 20 officers and a forensic truck on the scene.
Just as certain is the fact that Cherif Kouachi, 32, and Said Kouachi, 34, are not in custody, which means that France’s national nightmare is not over.
“They are still free, they are heavily armed, so we can be afraid of further violence,” French Prime Minister Manuel Valls told French broadcaster RTL.
The gas station story seems retarded, like someone just made it up – fog of war. Surely these monkey masterminds would have gas money. And probably wouldn’t be heading for Paris. They’d want to be heading toward Morocco, I’d imagine. And they are probably already there. With the amount of time these lazy Frenchmen took to identify them, they could have literally left the crime scene for the airport, boarded a plane with their French passports.
