| Citizen Brutality Against Police on the Rise By Michael Reagan Unfortunate timing for the leftists currently screaming "police brutality." Statistics from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reveal that during 2014 it was citizen brutality that was getting out of hand. According to Fox News, "The number of law enforcement officers killed by firearms in the U.S. jumped by 56 percent this year and included 15 ambush assaults." That certainly puts Officer Darren Wilson's response to gentle giant Michael Brown's assault in a different light, doesn't it? This year has already seen two ambush shootings in Houston, Texas, which fortunately resulted in no injuries. Along with a constable who had the brake lines cut on his official car. It appears the rhetorical war on cops has become all too real. "With the increasing number of ambush-style attacks against our officers, I am deeply concerned that a growing anti-government sentiment in America is influencing weak-minded individuals to launch violent assaults against the men and women working to enforce our laws and keep our nation safe," said Craig Floyd, chairman and CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. This week in the Wall Street Journal, Kent Osband pointed out that police officers are in much greater danger from the public than the public is from the police. "Federal statistics report 43 million blacks or African-Americans in the U.S. and 630,000 police officers, or about 68 blacks per officer. Combining that with the 11-to-1 homicide ratio suggests that police are six times as likely to be killed by black civilians than black civilians are to be killed by police." If black lives matter — then it's equally true that blue lives matter, too. Which is why police are often wary of the public, particularly in uncertain or hostile circumstances. As Osband concludes, "While blacks are 14 percent of the U.S. population, they account for 47 percent of killings of police. Given a random sample, blacks are 5.6 times as likely as non-blacks to kill a police officer. This likely causes officers to act more defensively with unfamiliar blacks than with unfamiliar non-blacks." That puts a premium on defying police and not cooperating with cops; you have a volatile situation that can break very badly in an instant. If Michael Brown had stopped walking down the middle of the street, he'd be alive today. If Eric Garner had stopped fighting, he would be, too. The police are the watchmen who maintain order in society and deserve our support until their actions prove otherwise.
