What's eating up your hard drive? These 5 utilities tell all
Whether your Mac has an old-school spinner or high-capacity Fusion Drive, it could always stand to gain a little extra room. Even if you don't obsessively download full seasons of Breaking Bad, there are countless ways for your hard drive to get filled up with stuff you don't need anymore—much of it buried in deep, dark folders you never see. From clearing caches to deleting old mail attachments and forgotten files, a little diligence can go a long way toward keeping that precious space clear. But if you don't have the time or patience to run maintenance scripts and root out browser caches, there are more than a few willing hands to help you out in the Mac App Store. A quick scan of the Utilities section will reveal an abundance of disk cleaners and inspectors that all promise to seek out the cruft that might be taking up necessary room and help you reclaim some of the space you've lost. Finding the right one for your needs can be arduous work, but to get you started, I took a look at five of them.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Motorola and LG vie to be first with Android 5.0 update
The race to upgrade smartphones to Android 5.0 (also known as Lollipop) is on, with LG Electronics and Motorola vying with Google's Nexus devices for bragging rights.Motorola Mobility has posted upgrade details and instructions for second generation models of the Moto G and Moto X, and on Wednesday at least some unlocked Moto G's were able to download the upgrade. LG earlier said it will start upgrading the G3 this week, starting in Poland and following soon in other countries. It makes sense for the two companies to start slowly in order to root out any problems before letting a larger audience download the upgrade. Issues with Lollipop battery consumption reportedly postponed the availability of Andoid 5.0 on Google's Nexus devices, which should start getting it any day now.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

3 key things to know about Yosemite and security
Like its National Park namesake, Apple's newest operating system can be imposing, perhaps even a little daunting to newcomers. And although you won't find any bears in the digital version of Yosemite, that doesn't mean it's danger free. That's because in order to return information about local services such as restaurants and other retail establishments it needs to know your location. That sounds logical, but it raised concerns from privacy advocates—and privacy-minded users—about just what information was being transmitted and what else it might be used for.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

HP's strange new SlateBook: A guided tour
HP SlateBookWith the SlateBook 14, HP has delivered a notebook computer running the Android mobile OS. The question is, why? To be clear, this isn't an Android tablet with a detachable keyboard. This is a full-fledged notebook that runs Android—and only Android, a mobile OS meant for smartphones and tablets. The SlateBook isn't officially sanctioned by Google. (The company focuses on developing its Chrome OS for notebooks.) So why did HP make it, and how well does Android work on a notebook? The company loaned me a SlateBook, which I used for a week in order to figure these questions out.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
