Big Govt Obamacare Means Big Premiums

By Michael Reagan

The American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy defines "you've made your bed, now lie in it" as an "expression commonly used as a response to people who have been complaining about problems they have brought on themselves."

It's a perfect response to Obamacare complaints from Democrat Reps. Lloyd Doggett, Sander Levin and Jim McDermott. The Associated Press describes them as, "Three senior House members . . . [who] worked to help steer Obama's law through rancorous congressional debates from 2009-2010."

Now the three complaining congressman are whining about the impact Obamacare's mandatory insurance requirement will have on their constituents. The mandatory requirement that was a centerpiece of the law that even Nancy "We have to pass it to find out what's in it" Pelosi knew about before the vote.

The Associated Press (AP) describes the progressive Obamacare fine scale, "For 2014, the fine was the greater of $95 per person or 1 percent of household income above the threshold for filing taxes. That fine will be collected when taxpayers file their 2014 returns. But this year the fine will jump to the greater of 2 percent of income or $325. By 2016, the average fine will be about $1,100, based on government figures."

H&R Block estimates approximately 4 million people will be forced to pay a fine for being uninsured. And Doggett, Levin, and McDermott assume these same voters will be angry with Democrats. And why not? Before, the main idea behind not having health insurance was it was free.

Now, thanks to Obamacare, not having insurance gets you fined. But without the mandatory requirement Obamacare collapses under its own weight, because unless big government forces the healthy young to buy health insurance, creating a larger base on which to spread the cost, the premiums will be so high no one can afford health insurance.

So the idealism of health care for everyone in actual practice becomes the IRS coercion of buy health insurance or be fined. The solution for these Democrats is yet another Obamacare deadline extension.

So taxpayers who've been in a coma for the last three years, not realizing no insurance means a fine applies to them, can sign up after they pay their taxes — which is long past the original deadline.

Everyone but the federal government is familiar with the concept of pay as you go. Now Democrats have introduced a new legal concept: Legislate as you go. Pass a bill so unwieldy, complex, and oppressive that it requires constant revision and tinkering to save the public from some of its malignant effects.

Then each time leftist Democrats revise the bad law they originally passed they can claim they are fighting for you.
