DCIM: Not Just for Large Data Centers

When it comes to efficiently and effectively running a data center, small data centers have many of the same concerns and challenges as their big brothers. The big challenge for small data centers is limited resources in terms of technology, staffing and funding, which translates into inefficiencies, growth limitations and even an increased potential for system failures. Evaluating DCIM Products

Data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tool penetration was about 1% in 2010. Gartner predicts that by, 2017, DCIM tools will be deployed in more than 60% of the larger data centers in North America. Read the rest of the article

Three Million Data Centers in the U.S.

There's no doubt that failing to focus on energy efficiency in the data center will continue to drive energy use higher and higher. That said, with just a small decrease in energy usage (via a small increase in energy efficiency), organizations can begin to save a considerable amount of money. In fact, it's estimated that a 20% decrease in energy usage could result in about $2 billion in cost savings by 2020 within the U.S. Not a bad payback for a relatively small decrease in energy usage. Data Center Evolution: Test-and-Learn

Data centers are evolving much like the cloud; test-and-learn drives experiential learning, which eventually translates into new products and services. It's an evolutionary rather than revolutionary approach, with a good portion of the change being driven by testing and learning. What about you? Have you taken a test-and-learn approach when building an internal data center or using cloud-based services? Read the rest of the article.

The Future of DCIM

The future of the DCIM platform looks to be bright. No longer will DCIM be a tactical software package used to monitor the data center. DCIM is morphing into an all-around data center management platform to manage all aspects of the data center. Read the rest of the article

Treating the Data Center as a System

The organizations that took the system thinking approach have usually been the same organizations that are cited as doing things right with their data center. These companies have also generally been the ones that are pointed to as examples of using technology to deliver real business value. Read the rest of the article.
