Documentary on Dr. Mireles wins awards at Sundance

Borderland Beat Posted by DD republished in part from Mexico Daily Review

I almost cried when I saw this.  I know it will not get him out of prison, but to know he is not being forgotten and that his name and story is being kept in the public eye is heartwarming.  This kind of exposure keeps the pressure on the Mexican government to release him from the trumped up charges for which he was imprisoned.   With Castillo gone from Michoacan, I believe he will be released in the not too distant futureI hope his health will permit him to be the leader and hero that the people of Mexico so desperately need.

When your government cannot provide basic safety from murderous organized criminals, is it acceptable to take the law into your own hands to protect your family, your land, and your country? That is the question at the heart of Cartel Land, a powerfully visceral journey of two modern-day vigilante movements.

In the Mexican state of Michoacán, Dr. Jose Mireles, a small-town physician known as "El Doctor," shepherds a citizen uprising against the Knights Templar, the violent drug cartel that has wreaked havoc on the region for years. Meanwhile, in Arizona's Altar Valley—a narrow, 52-mile-long desert corridor known as Cocaine Alley—Tim "Nailer" Foley, an American veteran, heads a small paramilitary group called Arizona Border Recon, whose goal is to halt Mexico's drug wars from seeping across our border.

Intrepid filmmaker Matthew Heineman (Escape Fire) embeds himself in the heart of darkness as Nailer, El Doctor, and the cartel each vie to bring their own brand of justice to a society where institutions have failed. Brilliant, dangerous, and provocative, Cartel Land is a chilling meditation on the breakdown of order and the borderline where life trumps law.

61 bodies found at abandoned cremetorium - Acapulco

Investigators at the scene inside abandoned crematorium
Police in Acapulco responded last night about 10:30PM to complaints from neighbors of a "bad smell" coming from an abandoned crematorium.  Upon investigation authorities  found at least 61 bodies in various states of decomposition inside the crematorium.

Some of the bodies were fully clothed while others were nude and wrapped in sheets and some scattered in piles on the floor.  Lime had been sprinkled on the bodies and around the interior to disguise or limit odor from the decomposing bodies.  There were bodies of both men and women and at least one child found.

Elements of the army, Federal Police, and the state attorney generals office were called in to assist in the investigation.  The investigation is in the early stages and there are few definitive answers as to why the bodies were there or who is responsible  at this point.

The abandoned crematorium is about 200 miles from Iguala where 43 students from a teachers college were kidnapped on Sept. 27 of last year.  Even though the investigators said they are trying to determine how long the bodies had been there one of them stated he did not believe they were bodies of the missing students because of the advanced state of decomposition.

Information gathered from the neighbors indicated the crematorium had been abandoned for at least a year.  Another report said the phone at the site had been disconnected since 2008.

Acapulco has been beset by drug gang violence but it was not immediately clear whether the bodies were murder victims dumped by a gang, or whether the crematorium's operators left corpses there when the facility closed down.  Authorities are still trying to find out who the owner/operator of the crematorium was when it was abandoned.    It would seem that the crematorium was doing a booming business if it had 61 bodies accumulated when it closed.

Local authorities stated they believed it was a case of "negligence" and did not involve organized crime..

Miguel Angel Godinez, attorney general for the state of Guerrero, told Radio Formula that " "We can't say for now that there is an indication that organized crime participated in this, but we can't rule it out," Godinez told Radio Formula.

There are thousands "missing" in Mexico, yet authorities up to this point have said nothing about suspecting these bodies might be part of the missing which is the first thing that would have come to my mind if I were investigating.

A press conference is scheduled for this afternoon that will hopefully give the people some answers.  However the investigation seems to be starting out reflecting the attitude of President Pena Nieto when all the violence in Guerrero started to draw attention from the media.  He stated "it is a local problem".

The Attorney General in Guerrero,  Miguel Angel Godinez, said this morning that,
"We are talking about a clear violation of state sanitation laws,"

La Tuta message says: "Los Viagras are the worse criminals I've ever met...worse than me"

Lucio for Borderland Beat translation by "777"

Lucio: "El Gallito" Cousin of the now deceased former leader of Caballeros Templarios, Nazario Moreno González aka  "El Chayo",  took over the operations of the cartel after the death of  Chayo in March 2014.

La Tuta, Mexico's most wanted drug trafficker, said his former partners of the criminal group "Los Viagras",  led by seven Sierra Santana brothers,  allied with the cousin of "El Chayo" to dispute control of the criminal organization.  Viagras were  CT's  first splinter group, splitting in 2013.

 Audio Narrative Translation:

Good afternoon .. To all the people of Michoacán, and with much respect, from Mexico, from the areas where my voice is being heard, Arteaga, and Tumbascatio.
I want, and with much respect, to bring to your attention some occurrences in Michoacán.

The brothers, Sierra Santana, aka Los Viagras, commanders of G250, a Fuerza Rural group, are nothing but criminals.

I believe they are even more of a criminal than I am, they are worse than me.  They have no loyalty, no honor, they rob and they are kidnappers. I regret meeting them. The more I talk bad about them, the greater of enemies they become.
I feel for what has happened to Hipolito and Americano.
I have no idea who is behind this. I only know that we should act accordingly and bring peace to Michoacán.
I saw some commentaries that "Los Viagras" made, regarding a "supposed" relationship between Hipolito Mora and I. Hipolito doesn't support me in any way.
It's a vile lie and they don't even take care of their own mother.
(Co Leader Mariano Sierra Santana below)

To those guys that say the Mexican Army received 1 million dollars to release me, I can honestly say I have no dealings with Army, Marines, Gendarmería, Federal Police, DEA, and any other police forces.
I have to defend/hide myself from them. If they see me they will beat me up or even kill me.
Everything "Los Viagras" have to say is a complete lie. Don't believe everything that is said in Apatzingán.

People do your job and demand justice. Ask for safety. I will not be around there. I have no plans of even going there.
I want to clear up some things.

If "Los Viagras" have something against me, they should look for me. I just want you all to know that they are the worst criminals I have ever met.
All of them. Nicholas, (image at left with Papa Smurf) the chubby one, is a fake ass. You've heard the audios/recordings and noticed all the contradictions.
I too have contradicted myself and have apologized..

I regret leading that group. Like I said before, there was no other way for me. I know the federal government has an obligation to pursue me. Go right ahead. They have to look for me and they have to do their job.
To everyone from Tierra Caliente – Michoacán - Mexico, it's a lie what "Los Vigaras" have to say.
They will not support Hipolito Mora.
They don't know what to do anymore because they are worse than I am.

The government has identified them and they are within reach. They can arrest them whenever they feel like it. They are right under their noses.
They made a deal and became allies of Nazrio Moreno Gonzalez and El Gallito

I feel for all the people of Uruapan that were affected, not only in Uruapan but all of Michoacán.
Those that believed and were against all the bullshit Nazario Moreno Gonzalez was doing.
The one responsible for all that bullshit was El Gallito. I think his name is Homero. [it is Homero González Rodríguez]

I never ask their names.
Now it is known that "Los Viagras" are associates of "El Gallito". And are out to get me.
I feel for those people, from Uruapan, that believed in good autodefensas. As luck would have it they were betrayed by Los Viagras.

To all the guys, and excuse me if I don't get the names right, that are with El Gallito.

Sergio, Rafa, Matraca, Mariachi, Don Jose, Gavilan, (El Gavilan is the plaza chief in Petacalco Guerrero) (Metro, Paquito, Troyano, Paisano, all of you.

If you know how to work, you should work and earn money in such a way that doesn't involve stealing, kidnapping, extorting.

At our meetings, you guys would say you were tired of putting up with these fuckers. I couldn't do much because things were difficult back then. Now you have an opportunity to be free and working on your own.

Why follow those pieces of shit that steal and kidnap?

I am referring to El Gallo. I know he is my enemy and don't care. I hope El Gallito comes alone or just Los Viagras. God decides...

I don't have much else to say.

To all that were CT and were with us, you are all free now and can work on your own.

Abandon those so called "organized" groups. They are far from organized. (This stays in line with his previous message that he was finished with CT)

I was a pendejo/dumbass for having led all of you. I never did any stupid shit. I was only a narco trafficker. However,  I had to say I was not a narco.

All of you remember; including you fag Viagras.....what you said to me.

I regret protecting you and shaking your hand.

But oh well, those things are in the past……Nothing left to say.

He ends with announcing that this this is his last recording.....

Seido Target Hitmen in BCS Part 6 , The Fall of "El Compadron"

Posted: 06 Feb 2015 08:12 AM PST

Translated for Borderland Beat from a Zetatijuana Special Report by Otis B Fly-Wheel

Federal and Military operatives, on the morning of 29th of January captured the Boss of Plaza for narco trafficking in the North Zone of La Paz. Rolando Gonzalez Moreno. Left now are only the bosses of the South Zone, Alejandro Sanchez Trejo "El Peinado", Jose Fernando Torres Montenegro alias Jose Francisco Ojeda Torres "El Pepillo" and Edgar Amilcar Acosta Reyes "El Rayo".

When Federal and Military Agents surrounded Rolando Gonzalez Moreno "El Compadron"in number one and two Colonia Garzas Agricola de La Paz, Baja California Sur, the sought after narco was very nervous and didn't know what to do or how to react.

The Plaza Boss of the North Zone, had left his house and walked a block away when he was captured, he had been tipped off that Federal and Military Forces were on the way to arrest him.

From 6am on Thursday 29th of January, Federal and Military Agents started a series of operations together, in three colonias of La Paz. After the first part of the operation and before the second started, "El Compadron" had received information of the raids.

He only had time, he told his captors, to put on pants, jeans, shoes and a white t shirt, but not enough time to put a shirt on top, so he hurriedly left his house and fled on foot, heading for a paved alley.

After fleeing, his captors gave chase and saw him trying to jump a ditch, in which pipe was being laid, but due to his obesity, he never made it and fell in the ditch, where he was easily found by his pursuers.

The criminal boss of the principal cell of Boss Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, observed his captors, and kept silent.

He stayed silent, and when asked if his name was Rolando Gonzalez Moreno, he replied that it was not him.

He thought by saying this he would confuse his captors, but it did not. He had already been identified by his physique and physical features, informed one of the participants in this capture operation, including an Mexican Army Officer, who responded dryly. "Grow some balls and accept it Cabron, "we caught you and we fucked you already!" ( otis : I like this mans style ; )).

So the leader of "Los Mayitos", didn't respond verbally and didn't resist being taken into custody. Finally after six months of narco-war for control of the Plaza of La Paz between "El Compadron" and Jose Fernando Torres Montenegro "El Pepillo", one of the authors of all this violence in La Paz has fallen.

Presumed responsible for the crimes of being bodyguard of Damaso Lopez Nunez "El Licenciado", Esteban Espinoza Velazquez "El Pantera", and accompanying them Alberto Montero Lizarraga "El Mago" or "El Mandrake", and Enrique Urquiza Portillo "El Moreno", and "El Compadron" they had been tracking since July 2014 when the war started for the sale, distribution and transit of drugs in La Paz.

Lastly the PGR obtained information, about his movements, after some reconnaissance, they analysed the data and executed a plan to capture him.

The Operations

About 6:00 am on the 29th of January , the city of La Paz witnessed a series of Federal and Military operations, in the colonias' Maria Conchita, Garzas Agricola, and Fidepaz.

The first deployment started in La Privada numero 2, of the Maria Conchita colonia, when trucks full of Agents and Soldiers arrived, they disembarked from the trucks and proceeded down an alley located almost in front of the School of Nursing, in the National College of Technical Occupational Education (CONALEP), on Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue between Josefa Ortiz of Dominguez and Valentin Gomez Farias.

The force surrounded the two floor house colored yellow, where according to a neighbor they were searching for "El Compadron" and his people.

However, after searching the house they had no luck, until the second deployment in the colonia Garzas Agricola, close to 09:30 am they achieved the capture of the presumed head of the criminals known as "Los Mayitos".

The narco trafficker Rolando Gonzalez Moreno was handcuffed, in custody of the Soldiers for around an hour, meanwhile one block away, an Agent of the PGR at "El Compadron's" last residence, found two 9mm pistols and a fragmentation grenade.

The only detainee and his weapons were put at the disposal of the Centre of Strategic Operations (COE), and in the case of the weapons, they were submitted for ballistic testing, and the results proved that they had been fired in one of the recent homicides of the last few weeks.

Contrary to popular belief, "El Compadron" was not surrounded by a security detail of hit men. Practically he was alone.

After his detention and processing, the operation stretched to Los Cantaros street of the Fidepaz colonia, where Agents and Soldiers searched a property but found nothing.

The War

With the capture of "El Compadron", according to a representative of the Group for Coordination of State Public Security, "is not expected in any way to reduce the wave of violence in the city of La Paz."

The fact is according to the latest criminal map drawn up by Federal and Military Authorities, Luis Antonio Montoya Beltran "El Montoya" or "Don Carlos" or "El Artista", could assume, in the next few hours, control of "Los Mayitos", and continue operating for "El Mayo" Zambada.

The main beneficiaries of the capture of "El Compadron", said a member of the inter-institutional group, are Alejandro sanchez Trejo " El Peinado", Jose Fernando Torres Montenegro "El Pepillo", and Edgar Amilcar Acosta Reyes "El Rayo", who have the intention of being the most violent and bloodthirsty of this narco war in La Paz.

On this basis, an Agent of the Group of Coordination for State Public Security, considered that the capture of the boss, practically is cleansing the terrain in favor of "Los Damaso" for the following reasons:

To stop the war between "Los Mayitos" and "Los Damaso" for control of narco trafficking in La Paz. That is to say, to increase some of the "space" between the protagonists of this conflict.

To start an operation to cleanse Los Cabos, to put in his own people.

The possible starting of extortion and kidnappings of business men and women, and commercial enterprises in La Paz and Los Cabos.

The worst part, according to a member of the inter-institutional group, is yet to come....

Day by day, only missing from the PGR and the armed forces are the heads of the south zone: "El Peinado", "El Pepillo", and "El Rayo".
