When Phil Schiller dissed Google Glass as something no "normal" person would wear
I've never been a big believer in Google Glass. While you have to give Google credit for dreaming big and pushing the technological envelope, the notion that glasses with a mounted display would ever gain even a crumb of traction in the marketplace always struck me as utterly naive. Indeed, Google seemed to get more credit for dreaming big than for actually delivering a compelling product, a point I emphasized nearly two years ago in a satirical post titled, "If Apple had unveiled Google Glass."Now, in 2015, it looks like Google Glass is in flux. Earlier this month, Google announced that it was shutting down its explorer program and that the project will now be under the control of Tony Fadell, formerly of Nest and Apple. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

IBM launches Identity Mixer, an anonymous credential system
Happy Data Privacy Day!It’s your data, but it seems like every time you turn around there’s new data breach; when a company given the responsibility for securing your private data is hacked, what else does it know about you, have on you, besides the required data it asked for? Do they have your date of birth, home address, phone number, credit card number and security code? What if, when you sign in, you could selectively reveal only what is required and no more? What if you could use anonymity technology to authenticate for security but do so anonymously to protect your privacy?Researchers from IBM Research Zurich have come up with an Identity Mixer anonymous credential system… and “anonymous credentials are a key ingredient to protect one’s privacy in an electronic world.”To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

IDG Contributor Network: It's my network and I'll binge watch if I want to
In my first blog post I discussed the gap that exists between what consumers want and what the network can feasibly provide – what I referred to as the "agility gap." In just the four months since that post, we have seen a variety of new examples of the acceleration in technology advances for the consumer and end user, while the network chugs along trying to keep up.The most intriguing of these was Sony's unveiling of PlayStation Now at CES 2015, a cloud-based gaming subscription service that gives players unlimited streaming access to more than 100 games. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

How much money does Amazon make in the cloud? We'll find out soon
Thinkstock While reporting its year-end financial results, Amazon.com CFO Tom Szkutak also announced something that will make cloud-watchers giddy: The company plans to officially break out the financial results for its Amazon Web Services cloud computing division beginning next quarter.AWS has been anointed the leader of the IaaS cloud market for its breadth and depth of products and services, plus its massive scale - Gartner estimated last year that its cloud was five times larger than all of its competitors at the time, combined! Given that lead, AWS is also thought to be the leading revenue generator in the IaaS market. But no one knows for sure.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Virtual reality headsets are coming to airlines
Australian airline Qantas recently announced a partnership with Samsung to provide the latter's Gear VR virtual reality headsets to its passengers. The company says the headsets will provide unique content, like its airplanes during takeoff and landing or a 3D view of Sydney, and promises to eventually become a source for in-flight movies. For the time being – specifically, a three-month trial – the VR headsets will only be made available to first-class passengers (of course), and to those waiting for departure in the first-class lounges at the airports in Sydney and Melbourne.Although the content that most people would watch during a flight – namely TVs and movies – is still limited for the Gear VR, the device has received largely positive reviews across the board. Particularly when it comes to watching movies, this Gizmodo review touted the Oculus Cinema app, which gives the user the feeling that he or she is sitting in a theater while a movie plays on a screen ahead of them. You can even look around at the other parts of the theater, like the empty seats next to you, which sounds almost as entertaining as watching the movie on the virtual screen. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

The Internet of Things requires the Internet of Everywhere
This week, Cisco Live Europe kicks off in Milan, Italy. The City of Milan is not only the host city for Cisco Live, but also for the World Expo in 2015 when the city will show off its evolution to a smart city. Milan is just the latest city to leverage the power of IoT to transform itself. We've clearly entered the era of IoT, as examples can now be found in any region or any vertical – in other words, everywhere. However, the rapid acceleration of IoT does raise the question – is the infrastructure, most notably the cloud, really ready for IoT? There's no question that the cloud will play a key role in the success or failure of IoT, but is the cloud ready for IoT? Most cloud computing solutions are single points of computing resources. These are meant to have data backhauled to them so the information can be parsed or analyzed and then sent back to the source. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Cops worry Waze speed trap warnings will be used by cop-stalkers and police-killers
According to Waze: “Traffic is more than just red lines on the map. Get alerted before you approach police, accidents, road hazards or traffic jams, all shared by other drivers in real-time. It's like a personal heads-up from a few million of your friends on the road.”Cops, however, are not worked up about Waze because users can warn other drivers about police speed traps, but because the app allegedly “could put officers' lives in danger from would-be police killers who can find where their targets are parked.”To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

IDG Contributor Network: Why passwords are on the way out
