The top 15 tech companies on the Fortune 500
AppleApple passed HP as the largest tech company (on a trailing 12 month basis) in 2012 and there has been no looking back since. The company now dwarfs all other tech companies and tops the F500 list in two categories: Apple is the most profitable F500 company and it has the highest market value. Not bad for a company that 13 years ago posted revenue of $5.3 billion compared to IBM’s sales that year of $85.8 billion.  To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

5G networks look to new frequencies to deliver gigabit speeds
If operators are to build 5G mobile networks with download speeds at 10Gbps and above, they are going to need a lot more spectrum—but getting it won’t be easy. The amount of spectrum allocated to 5G will determine how fast networks based on the technology will eventually become. Until recently, only frequencies below 6GHz have been considered for mobile networks, mostly because they are good for covering large areas. But there’s now a growing need to unlock new spectrum bands in the 6GHz to 100GHz range too, attendees at the LTE and 5G World Summit conferences in Amsterdam heard this week. The use of spectrum in these bands is immensely important for 5G networks to be able to offer multiple gigabits per second, Robert DiFazio, chief engineer at wireless R&D company InterDigital Communications, said. By raising communication speeds, they are also expected to help lower latency in mobile networks. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

This wireless hotspot has room for 10 SIM cards for LTE roaming
Finnish company Uros has launched an LTE version of its wireless hotspot that can be equipped with 10 SIM cards to make roaming abroad easier. It’s slowly becoming more common for operators to let traveling users surf the Web and access email and apps via LTE networks, but the practice is nowhere near ubiquitous. Enter the Goodspeed 4G mobile hotspot, which was launched and demoed this week at the LTE World Summit in Amsterdam. The device is the world’s first commercially available 4G hotspot that can accommodate and switch automatically between 10 SIM cards, making it easier for busy travellers to cross borders, Uros said. Users only need to do two things to use it: switch it on and charge it, according to Tom Lindblad, vice president of global sales and marketing at Uros. Only the SIM cards provided by Uros can be used.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
