FCC grants VoIP service providers equal access to telephone numbers
Some of you may not have known this was controversial, but the FCC this morning announced that going forward VoIP service providers such as Vonage will no longer be second-class citizens when it comes to the doling out of telephone numbers.From an FCC press release:   The Federal Communications Commission today modernized and streamlined its rules governing the distribution of phone numbers by leveling the playing field for interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers, which are increasingly popular with consumers.Interconnected VoIP providers – defined as those capable of placing and receiving calls to and from the traditional phone network -- currently must get numbers from third-party carriers.  Allowing these providers to go directly to numbering administrators for phone numbers will benefit consumers by reducing costs and promoting additional competition from these innovative VoIP providers, the FCC found.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Microsoft tweaks Windows 10 preview program as it enters OS's final stretch
Microsoft on Friday said it would soon tweak the Windows 10 preview program as its engineers push toward the July 29 launch of the final code to customers. As of the next build to the Windows Insider program, Microsoft will require that participants associate their Microsoft Account -- typically the same username and password combination for accessing company services such as, OneDrive and Skype -- with the preview on their PC. "You'll need to connect the MSA [Microsoft Account] that you registered for the Windows Insider Program with (and accepted the 'Microsoft Windows Insider Program Agreement') in order to continue receiving new Windows 10 Insider Preview builds (both Fast and Slow rings) from Windows Update," wrote Gabriel Aul, the engineering general manager for Microsoft's operating system group who regularly blogs about the preview.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

The Skype Translator beta app now can help people say “guten tag” to their friends in Germany, thanks to an update it received on Thursday.Microsoft’s real-time translation app can now provide live voice and text translations for conversations involving people who speak German and French, in addition to English, Italian, Mandarin and Spanish.For example, someone who speaks English can call up another Skype Translator user who speaks German, and each will have their side of the conversation translated into the other’s native language in real time.
